UG economics students awarded in Polish Economic Society competition!

In the competition of the Polish Economic Society Gdańsk Branch, two main prizes - for a master's thesis and a bachelor's thesis - as well as two distinctions were awarded to graduates and undergraduates of economics at UG: Julia Recław, Wojciech Kamiński, Sara Stasiak, Wanessa Szuplewska and Przemysław Sadowski. They wrote the awarded works under the supervision of our researchers: dr inz. Aleksandra Koszarek-Cyra, dr Agnieszka Szmelter-Jarosz and dr Łukasz Dopierała.

 

The Finals of the XXVII edition of the Master's Thesis Competition and the XX edition of the Bachelor's Thesis Competition for 2023 took place on April 18, this year.

Since the beginning of the Competitions, they have aimed to support research on contemporary economic problems and innovation in the economy, with particular emphasis on the development of the Gdańsk region. A total of 27 theses from 7 Pomeranian universities took part in this year's competition: University of Gdańsk, Gdańsk University of Technology, Maritime University, Gdynia School of Administration and Business, Powiśle University and WSB Merito University.

The main prize in the XXVII edition of the Master's Thesis Competition was awarded to mgr Wojciech Kamiński, for his thesis entitled ‘Economic aspect of the energy transition in Poland with particular emphasis on the use of nuclear energy in the light of international solutions’, written under the supervision of dr Łukasz Dopierała (University of Gdańsk, Faculty of Economics, Department of International Financial Markets).

Distinctions were also awarded to mgr Karolina Kuklińska, for her thesis entitled ‘Cross-country Analysis of Household Wealth and Saving Behavior’, written under the supervision of dr Piotr Paradowski (Gdańsk University of Technology, Faculty of Management and Economics, Department of Statistics and Econometrics), and to mgr Klaudia Budzan for her thesis entitled ‘Level of Satisfaction of Polish Retail Customers with Logistics Services Provided by InPost sp. z o.o.’. written under the supervision of dr Krzysztof Ziółkowski (WSB Merito University in Gdańsk, Faculty of Computer Science and New Technologies).

An additional distinction in the form of the possibility to publish the thesis on the PTE website was awarded to mgr Kacper Nowak's thesis entitled ‘Consumer demand in the tourist season on the example of company X’, written under the supervision of dr inż. Aneta Waśniewska (Maritime University in Gdynia, Faculty of Management and Quality Sciences, Department of Management and Economics).

The main prize in the twentieth edition of the Bachelor's Thesis Competition was awarded to Julia Recław, a bachelor's degree student, for her thesis entitled ‘Logistical functions of mixed-use on the example of Garnizon in Gdańsk’, written under the supervision of dr Agnieszka Szmelter-Jarosz (University of Gdańsk, Faculty of Economics, Department of Logistics).

Distinctions were awarded to Przemysław Sadowski, a bachelor's degree student, for his thesis entitled ‘Armed conflicts with particular regard to their impact on the functioning of the capital market in the states - parties to the conflict’, written under the supervision of dr Sławomir Antkiewicz (University of Gdańsk, Faculty of Economics, Department of International Financial Markets), and Wanessa Szuplewska, a bachelor's degree student, for her thesis entitled ‘The influence of micromobility development on the implementation of the assumptions of sustainable urban development’, also written under the supervision of dr Agnieszka Szmelter-Jarosz from UG.

An additional distinction in the form of the possibility to publish the thesis on the PTE website was awarded to Bachelor's degree student Sara Stasiak for her thesis entitled ‘Stigmatisation of Criminality. ‘Criminal stigmatisation of real estate as a phenomenon affecting its value’, written under the supervision of dr inż. Aleksandra Koszarek-Cyra (University of Gdańsk, Faculty of Management, Department of Investment and Real Estate).

The final ceremony was held among the winners of the Competitions and their thesis supervisors, representatives of the Competitions' Patrons and Partners, as well as members of the Board, the Scientific Council and the Competition Chapter at the PES Branch in Gdańsk.

Winners of the Competitions and promoters of the winning theses received congratulatory diplomas and prizes sponsored by Partners of the Competitions and Patrons of Honour. The event was honoured by the presence of Ludwik Szakiel, Deputy Director of the Department of Economic Development of the Marshal's Office of Pomorskie Voivodeship, who encouraged the graduates to cooperate with the Office and use their achievements and interests for their future careers and cooperation with local government institutions and Pomeranian entrepreneurs.

The ceremony was also attended by representatives of the sponsors - PKS Gdańsk-Oliwa S.A. and Plona Consulting sp. z o.o.

The winner of the Master's Thesis Competition, mgr Wojciech Kamiński, a graduate of the University of Gdańsk, prepared and gave a presentation on his thesis concerning a recently important topic of the economic aspect of the energy transition in Poland, with particular emphasis on the use of nuclear energy in the light of international solutions.

In the next part of the meeting, lic. Julia Recław presented the assumptions of her winning thesis on the logistical functions of the ‘mixed-use’ based on Garnizon housing estate in Gdańsk.

The meeting concluded with a discussion of the issues raised in the winning and commended theses.
