Prof. Beata Możejko received her appointment as Director of the Memling Research Centre today from prof. Piotr Stepnowski, Rector of the UG.

'For me, this appointment is first and foremost a commitment to continue working on the team-based Memling project at the University of Gdańsk. It is not just about Hans Memling or his greatest work "The Last Judgement". Equally important is the broad European context, from the late Middle Ages to the present day,' - says prof. Beata Możejko from the Institute of History, Faculty of History, UG. - 'The Hans Memling triptych on show at the National Museum in Gdańsk, considered one of his most important works and one of the most valuable painting monuments in Poland, deserves even wider interest. The painting and its turbulent history offer enormous research potential. It is high time for this research to be systematic, centred around the scientific community associated with the University of Gdańsk, a university that has a 50-year tradition of building up its tradition and scientific community.'

The centre's activities focus on several research contexts. These include the historical thread, the legal-historical-philosophical discourse, the contemporary history of the triptych (from 1945 to the 21st century), the artistic discourse and, last but not least, the philosophical-legal discourse.

'The topics around the "Last Judgement" altarpiece have great international potential and we have already started such cooperation,' - adds prof. Beata Możejko.

The Memling Research Centre will operate as part of the University's Centre for Applied and Interdisciplinary Research, whose director is prof. dr hab. Krzysztof Bielawski.

The Memling Research Centre is open to the academic community. Already on October 28, as part of the 'Fridays at the Historical', the Centre's guests will be dr Angela Huang, director of the Research Centre for Hanse and Baltic History (FGHO) at the European Hanseatic Museum in Lübeck, and prof. Ulla Kypta from the University of Hamburg. In turn, an international interdisciplinary conference 'Body in History, Psychology and Law' will take place on November 23-24, with researchers from the UK, Greece, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands and Poland. Details will be available soon on the website.
