Improve your skills and embark on a beautiful journey with Erasmus Staff Week

Training? Why not Ireland or Croatia? Thanks to the mobility programme for university staff, teaching and administrative staff have the opportunity to improve their competencies abroad in one of 32 European countries.

Staff Week is designed for university employees who want to enhance their professional competencies. Those wishing to do so can go to one of the 32 countries in the training programme for a week. They receive funding for travel, accommodations and other expenses through Erasmus+; depending on the country, the rate per day is between €140 to €180.

The programme covers any training that takes place in the countries of the initiative (apart from courses in the country where the applicant currently lives). Staff Week aims to increase the competencies of university staff in the skills needed for their jobs, but there is a limit for language courses. At the University of Gdańsk, it is 50 applications per year. For the 2022/2023 academic year, all places for language training courses have been exhausted.

A list of courses that have applied for the programme can be found on the dedicated website, but these represent only a fraction of the training available during Staff Week. It is also worth mentioning that Erasmus offers additional funding for those who choose environmentally friendly means of transport

Going to Staff Week is not only a great opportunity to increase your competencies, but also to get to know a foreign culture, and not only the one in the destination country. Participants have the opportunity to exchange experiences about working at the university with people from all over Europe.

'In addition to the Irish, I met people from Hungary, Lithuania, Sweden, Spain, Portugal, the Czech Republic and even India. It's always good to step outside your bubble and talk to people from other countries, find out what they do for a living, what they work on or how their universities function,' - says dr Maria Matusiewicz from the Faculty of Economics at UG, who participated in the 'Academic Writing Skills' course in Galway, Ireland.

On the Staff Week website, Ireland is one of the most popular destinations for mobility. Courses in the Atlantic city of Galway include the beautiful Cliffs of Moher or a sunset over Salt Hill beach.

Current Staff Week offerings include time management training in Romania, sustainable tourism in practice in Tenerife, and a course on raising funds from the European Union organised by the University of Split in partnership with SEA EU.

- 'I would definitely recommend taking part in Staff Week. Every trip and every new experience makes us grow, we always learn something new. No matter what course topic you choose, an Erasmus-funded training abroad is an opportunity you should not miss,' - encourages dr Maria Matusiewicz.
