The Minister of Culture and National Heritage, Hanna Wróblewska, handed out appointment letters to members of the Archival Council for the new term of office covering the years 2024 - 2027. Among the members of this important body is dr Monika Płuciennik - Director of the Centre for Document Management and Archives at the University of Gdańsk and Vice President of the General Board of the Association of Polish Archivists.
The Archives Council fulfils an advisory and consultative function to the General Director of the State Archives. Its history dates back to the beginning of the Second Republic of Poland, when by virtue of a decree of 7 February 1919 the foundations of archival organisation in Poland were established. In its present form, the Council has been operating since 1983 on the basis of the Act on National Archival Resources and Archives.
The Council's main tasks include supporting the General Director of the State Archives in key areas such as storing and providing access to archival materials, developing infrastructure and implementing modern technological solutions. The Council also gives its opinion on important initiatives, including the ‘Strategy for the Activities of the State Archives 2021 - 2030’ and amendments to archival legislation that are of key importance for the future of Polish archives.
The activities of the Archives Council are an important element supporting the development of the archival system in Poland, contributing to the preservation of national heritage and its availability for future generations.
