Original title: Marianne & Leonard: Words of Love

Director: Nick Broomfield

Cinematographer: Barney Broomfield

Duration: 102 min.

From the legendary British documentary filmmaker Nick Broomfield.

Marianne & Leonard: Words of Love is a beautiful and dramatic love story of Leonard Cohen and his muse Marianne Ihlen. Their feeling was born in 1960 on the idyllic Greek island of Hydra, the haven for artists from all over the world. The film shows the beginning of their relationship and its transformation when Cohen achieved musical success. Nick Broomfielld was 20 years old when he met Marianne Ihlen on Hydra in 1968. Marianne introduced him the music of Leonard Cohen and encouraged him to make the first film.

Marianne & Leonard: Words of Love depicts their love journey as Leonard became a successful musician and about Marianne's extraordinary power of inspiration. It is thanks to her that the immortal songs "So Long, Marianne" and "Bird on a Wire" were written. Nick Broomfield uses archival recordings and interviews to tell the story of this beautiful and romantic love until its last chapter. Marianne and Leonard died in 2016, three months apart.
