The Film and Media Division (Faculty of Languages of the University of Gdańsk), the Historian Research Club (Faculty of History of the University of Gdańsk) and the Confucius Institute extend an invitation to an interdisciplinary scientific session 100 lat ekranowej grozy - 100 years of screen horror. The pretext for the conference is the hundredth anniversary of the premiere of The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari directed by Robert Wiene. This pioneering work of German expressionism has had a huge impact on the development of cinematography. Critics see it as a prophetic vision of totalitarian systems and threats to democracy.

The invitation is extended to those studying and researching the humanities and all academics fascinated by the phenomenon of popular culture. The main aim of this conference is to initiate a scientific discussion focused on horrors, thrillers and historical films which are a metaphor for the contemporaneous political situation.

The presentations should be focused on world cinema and pop culture. We welcome talks on films from various cultural circles. A separate panel on Asian cinema is planned.

We especially encourage submissions related to one of the following themes:

- Asian panel (Asian cinema) - horror through the eyes of the inhabitants of the Asian continent,

- faces of horror in the silent era (1895-1927), classical cinema (1930-1960), new wave (1960-1980) and contemporary films (1980-2019),

- war as horror,

- totalitarian state terror,

- everyday life horror,

- power as an allegory of fear.

Please note that these are only suggestions and we are open to your ideas and concepts.

Information from the sponsor - Confucius Institute in Gdańsk

In recent years, excellent Asian cinema productions from South Korea, Japan or China have appeared on European screens. Film genres most appreciated by the audience include suspenseful thrillers and horror movies. Exploring Far East film art is our reason for joining the Conference. A separate session is planned for papers on Asian thrillers and horrors films, which will be held under the patronage of the Confucius Institute at the University of Gdańsk. We hope that the dynamically developing Asian film industry will inspire conference presentations. Everyone interested in the subject of the world of Far East cinema is welcome to join the Asian horror panel at the One hundred years of screen horror conference held on 27-28 February  2020 at the Faculty of Languages and the Faculty of History of the University of Gdansk.
