For over 55 years, the University of Gdańsk has helped shape Oliwa’s identity. Today, the university’s largest campus is an integral part of the district, and for decades the academic community has helped shape its scientific, social and cultural character. Therefore, during the celebrations marking the 100th anniversary of Oliwa’s incorporation into Gdańsk, the University actively participated in the jubilee events by placing the University of Gdańsk Medal - a symbol of the university’s history, values, and academic heritage - into the Oliwa Time Capsule.
The celebrations took place on 4 July in Oliwa Park. Representatives of 31 institutions and organisations signed a declaration of cooperation for the benefit of Oliwa, which, together with commemorative items, was placed in the Oliwa Time Capsule - a symbolic message for future generations.
On behalf of the University of Gdańsk, the declaration was signed bythe Vice-Rector for Student Affairs dr hab. Urszula Patocka-Sigłowy, prof. UG. The university also placed the University of Gdańsk Medal in the time capsule - a sign of the university’s enduring connection with Oliwa.
The centenary celebrations provided an opportunity to highlight the role of the institutions that help shape modern Oliwa. The signatories to the declaration included, amongst others, cultural institutions, community organisations, schools, businesses and the University of Gdańsk - for many years one of the most important partners in the development of this part of the city.
The University of Gdańsk’s connection with Oliwa is not only geographical but also symbolic. The Oliwa campus has been part of the district’s landscape for over half a century, and the academic community plays an active role in its daily life.
The Oliwa Time Capsule also contains mementoes donated by other institutions associated with the district. The capsule, situated between the palm house and the Oliwa Stream, also holds a declaration of cooperation and digital Archives of messages from residents, which in several decades’ time will bear witness to contemporary Oliwa and the people shaping its history.
