UG delegation visits the Christian Albrecht University of Kiel in the framework of SEA-EU

A delegation from the University of Gdańsk participated in workshops and project meetings within the SEA-EU Alliance in Kiel. Researchers and staff from the university participated in two SEA-EU events: the workshop ‘Migration Narratives’ and ‘Teaching Staff Week: Micro-credentials: implementation and teaching’.

The delegation consisted of dr Grzegorz Welizarowicz and dr hab. Arkadiusz Misztal, prof. UG from the Department of American Studies of the Institute of English and American Studies of the Faculty of Philology, dr Julia Ziółkowska from the Department of Spatial Economy of the Institute of Social and Economic Geography and Spatial Management of the Faculty of Social Sciences, and Joanna Pleskot from the Education Office. In addition, a Joint Programme Working Group project meeting was held simultaneously, attended by representatives of the UG Education Office: Director Anna Smykowska and Marek Kościelniak.

Migration Narratives workshop

The first days of the delegation were marked by the ‘Migration Narratives’ workshop. It was attended by researchers gathered in the SEA-EU American Studies working group. The workshop aimed to develop a common theoretical and pedagogical model on migration narratives that would combine European perspectives with American Studies issues. Another expected result is the creating of a joint research project and a cooperative curriculum for American Studies within the SEA-EU alliance. The workshop was organised by prof. Jutta Zimmermann and her team working at the Department of English of the Christian-Albrechts-Universität in Kiel.

During two days of meetings, talks, and case studies, issues such as research cooperation, education, or migration narratives were discussed. The workshop confirmed the great potential for collaboration among SEA-EU partners in the field of American Studies. SEA-EU partners present a high research standard and level of expertise.

In addition, the partners developed a concept for a joint course on migration narratives conducted in a Blended Intensive Programme (BIP). The concept is intended to reflect and respond to the main tenets of the European University of the Seas, namely the internationalisation of the programme, the introduction of joint programmes and degrees, and the promotion of inclusivity, sustainability and multilingualism.

Teaching Staff Week: ‘Micro-credentials: implementation and teaching’

On September 27-29, 2023, another event took place: ‘Teaching Staff Week: Micro-credentials: implementation and teaching’ organised by the SEA-EU team of Christian Albrecht University Kiel. The workshop was attended by teachers and administrative staff representing all universities in the SEA-EU network. The aim of the Staff Week was to develop a pioneering pedagogical model on micro-credentials in response to the Council of Europe’s recommendation in the

RECOMMENDATION on a European approach to micro-credentials for lifelong learning and employability.

At this event, the partners presented the progress of individual universities in implementing micro-credentials and discussed the general programme model that could be introduced in this respect within the SEA-EU network. The implementation of micro-credentials could occur through open electives accessible to all partners for all study programmes and levels.

The event took place September 25-29, 2023.
