With over 130 rooms providing accommodation for 230 students of the University of Gdańsk (including four places adapted for people with disabilities and one that can be adapted for a carer of a person with a disability), the next stage of work on the renovation and refurbishment of Student Hall of Residence no. 9 on Bitwy pod Płowcami Street in Sopot is now underway. On 4 November 2026, together with the main contractor, TEXOM S.A., which is carrying out the project on a ‘design and build’ basis, we symbolically ‘broke ground’ for the construction of the building’s new wings.
The scope of the project includes the construction of two new, four-storey wings (with basements) and the redevelopment and renovation of the existing building. The necessary technical infrastructure will also be put in place. The works are due to be completed in autumn 2028.
The ceremonial launch of the main phase of construction works was attended by: the Rector of the University of Gdańsk prof. Piotr Stepnowski, the Mayor of Sopot Magdalena Czarzyńska-Jachim, the Chairman of the Management Board of TEXOM S.A. Krystian Woś and the Director of the Gdańsk Branch Jarosław Świgoń.
‘This is an important day for our university and, above all, for our students. We are launching a project that will create a modern, comfortable and welcoming place to live, study and pursue students’ passions,’ emphasised Julia Łaska, a University of Gdańsk student from the Centre for Student and Doctoral Activities.
Student Hall of Residence no. 9 was taken out of academic use at the end of 2019, and in 2024 it was loaned to the town of Sopot to meet the housing neeStudents Hall of Residence of refugees from Ukraine. Its renovation and return to normal use will significantly expand the University of Gdańsk’s accommodation provision for students from outside the Tricity and its immediate surroundings. The building is situated in the immediate vicinity of the University of Gdańsk’s Sopot campus, close to the Faculty of Economics and the Faculty of Management; another advantage is its proximity to public transport and tourist attractions, including the beach and Sopot town centre.
Currently, the University of Gdańsk has 1,326 places across seven halls of residence. Plans for the development of student accommodation also include the refurbishment of Student Hall of Residence no. 8 in Sopot and the construction of two new halls of residence in the Polanki Street area of Gdańsk.
