The helplessness of a philosopher. Talks about prof. Jerzy Limon at the Shakespeare Theatre

It was prof. Limon's wish for the theatre to be a place of debate on the philosopher's helplessness. A philosopher, that is a thinking and sensitive man, who tries to understand the complexity of the world," emphasise the organisers of the meeting.

- 'We are helpless in the face of the tragic, premature and unjust death of prof. Jerzy Limon,' we read on the website of the Shakespeare Theatre. - There are more and more reasons for our helplessness: a pandemic, the degeneration of political life, the devastation of the natural environment, social inequality, the marginalisation of art and thought widespread stupidity...

The talk will be about the visionary work and creativity of the professor. - 'We want it to be our farewell to him, but also a common reflection on the challenges and tasks he had left for us.'

The guests at the meeting entitled 'The helplessness of the philosopher. Jerzy Limon. Prospero' will discuss the Professor's view of culture, its problems, as well as his vision of contemporary Shakespeare and the tasks that face the continuators of his work. As a part of the series 'Rozmowy o współczesności z Szekspirem w tle'. The participants will include Łukasz Drewniak, theatre critic, editor, selector of the Golden Yorick Competition, prof. dr hab. Stanisław Rosiek from the Philology Department of the University of Gdańsk, writer, founder of słowo/obraz terytoria publishing house, and Anna Augustynowicz, theatre director, artistic director of Teatr Współczesny in Szczecin.

'(...) Prospero - I am deeply convinced of this - is a literary figure, who translates very well when juxtaposed with the phenomenon of Jerzy Limon. And vice versa - the phenomenon becomes comprehensible only when viewed from the perspective of Prospero. Prospero is the key to Limon and to "the philosopher's helplessness", towards which he was driven by crazy intellectual ocean currents, to which he entrusted himself many years ago,' writes Piotr Augustyniak, curator of the cycle Helplessness of a Philosopher, on the website of the Shakespeare Theatre in a text that will soon be published in Przegląd Polityczny.
