The space at the Oliwa university campus is changing. We want the University of Gdańsk to gradually become a space that is more and more friendly to the social and natural environment. Wooden benches have recently appeared on the lawns of the Campus. The University is also changing the inscription at the Faculty of Social Sciences on Al. Grunwaldzka by introducing a refreshed logo, but also by adapting to the landscape resolution in force in Gdańsk.
The University of Gdańsk is one of the first universities in Poland classified in rankings taking into account the implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. This is why the Rector, prof. dr hab. Piotr Stepnowski, has repeatedly stressed how important the idea of a green, open and environmentally friendly university is for our university. It is worth remembering that the Rector graduated in environmental protection. He was also the originator of the idea of the Ecopark at the Campus.
The university started with changes that could be introduced least expensively - 5 bee families settled by the former Rector's Office, surrounded by trees and by the avenue of lime trees in Bażyńskiego Street. Their presence does not affect the development of endangered wild bee species, which can successfully live around Ekopark. In recent days, wooden benches and benches with tables have appeared in green areas and along roads. Some of them were set up as a small amphitheatre. This was possible thanks to the forest inspector Mr Andrzej Przewłocki from the Kaliska Forestry Commission, who donated the wooden beams for the benches free of charge.
Soon, work will also begin on launching the first rain garden on campus, which will reduce the flow of rainwater into the sewage system.
The care of the university's green areas has been entrusted to experienced biologist and school textbook author mgr Alina Szlachetko.
While tidying up the campus and its surroundings, it turned out that the University of Gdańsk was obliged to change the inscription on the Faculty of Social Sciences building to comply with the requirements of the landscape resolution in force in Gdańsk.
- 'The resolution cleaned up the city's landscape. Gone are the ugly advertisements and huge inscriptions on buildings. Since the university's logotype was also changed, we could change the inscription,' - explains Chancellor Jacek Jętczak. - 'We didn't want to give it up at all, because it has become part of the landscape of the district and it informs that our university is here. The inscription has become a part of the landscape and everyone would probably miss it.'.
The removal of the sign from the WNS building took place today (10.09), the installation of the new one is planned for next week. It is not yet known what will happen with the previous sign.
- 'We have several ideas,' - says Chancellor Jacek Jętczak. - 'Their realisation also depends on the condition of the dismantled letters.'.
Soon, photovoltaic panels will be installed on UG buildings, which are not covered by the so-called project funding. - Maintenance of such large buildings consumes a lot of energy, which for the sake of the environment and, of course, also to reduce the bills, we want to draw from alternative sources - concludes the University's Chancellor.
Such a large Campus as the Oliwa Campus of the University of Gdańsk creates many opportunities for using ideas that protect nature and support its development. At the same time, the University fulfils its mission of nature education.
