Data, data, more and more data. A lake, a sea, an ocean of data. Where does it come from? Who collects it and for what purpose? What can be done with it? Are they a blessing or a threat to the society of the 21st century? These and other questions will be answered as part of a series of Science Cafés by dr hab. Krzysztof Najman, professor of the University of Gdańsk, from the Department of Statistics, Faculty of Management, UG.
We invite you to open meetings in the form of science cafés bringing the scientific activity of the University staff closer to a wider audience. This time, the lecture entitled 'Big Data, or the world in the ocean of data' will be presented by dr hab. Krzysztof Najman, professor of the University of Gdańsk.

Abstract:
When you wake up in the morning and look at your smartwatch screen to check what time it is, it is by no means your first activity that has been recorded on dozens of servers around the world...
Even when you sleep your heart rate and blood oxygenation are recorded. The motion sensor will record any major change in your sleeping position. As soon as you get up, this fact will be registered, the corresponding app will congratulate you on a successful sleep, and the statistics about your daily rhythm will be updated. When you turn on the lights early in the morning, start the coffee machine or the toaster to make toast, the spike in energy demand will be registered by many energy production and distribution companies.
When you play music from a streaming service, the servers will remember when and what you listen to. Your preferences will be updated and your playlists enriched. At the same time, your social media accounts receive updates. Your inbox swells with emails. The day hasn't even started yet, and already there's a wealth of data describing your every activity.
Even more data is generated by every modern enterprise. More and more activities are measured in detail, constantly monitored, and every action is recorded in databases. Every enterprise strives to minimise costs, shorten the supply chain, optimise at every stage of its operations. It competes with many other enterprises. Data-Driven Management needs data. Lots and lots of data and methods to extract information from it. It needs Big Data.
