Every year thousands of new students come to the University of Gdańsk. What are they guided by when making their decisions? Why do they decide on this particular course? Is the offer of the University of Gdańsk wide enough? We asked secondary school students who are considering applying to the University of Gdańsk this year.
Karolina Pobłocka - landscape architecture technician
- I would like to study genetics - I like working in a lab and genetic modifications. In technical school we practiced design and learned the names of specific plants, soils. It doesn't interest me that much. I don't want to look at the whole of a particular organism, but more in terms of cells. I'm also interested in the Faculty of Biotechnology, although not because of the medicine-related majors. I would rather work in some industry, maybe something in cosmetology. If I had to choose something completely different, I would go for film studies.
Maria Dolecka - linguistics class
- I am extremely torn when it comes to choosing my studies. On the one hand, I would like to do some more serious stuff, but I'm also interested in more humanistic majors like cultural studies or Roman studies. On the other hand, I could go for criminology or chemical business. I don't know yet. It is rather impossible to find a major that would combine all my interests. I have too many ideas about what to do with myself. For today I think I will choose cultural studies. The programme looks interesting. There are so many classes that I could probably combine my studies with work and make a living somehow. This year I resigned from my spatial management studies, where we studied seaside space. I hope that in Cultural Studies I'll learn not only about the Tricity, but also about civilizations from all over the world.
Weronika Węglerska - humanities class
- I would like to go to law school, but I am also considering criminology and criminalistics. I've just been to the stand of the Faculty of Law and Administration and my impressions are really positive. I heard about the WPiA clubs, which supposedly help with specialisations.
I am interested in criminal law myself. I have a legal advisor in my family, my mother also works in services that deal with law. I would kind of like them to be proud of me in the future. They say that lawyer is such a cool profession. At the same time, I would like to prove that you can do something "worthwhile" after a humanities class. As for the university itself, it looks very good from the outside and inside, has a good location and offers a lot of interesting opportunities for students.
Paweł Cuper - mathematics and geography class
- I am considering two fields of study related to film, namely film and audiovisual culture and audiovisual production. I am not sure yet. The former seems to be more theoretical, the latter practical. I've heard that there are a lot of cool student films from UG, but I haven't yet managed to find out what it actually looks like. I don't know if it's within the scope of the university, but I think it would be interesting if there were courses available at UG that were aimed purely at film practice.
Natalia Rapska - IT technician
- I'm definitely considering theatre studies, or possibly management of artistic institutions. I also had a look at Scandinavian studies. Unfortunately, this year there is no specialisation that I wanted to go for. In the previous recruitment process for the management of artistic institutions there was a stage-manager specialisation, which was created in cooperation with the Vocal and Acting Studio in Gdynia. The programme included practical as well as theoretical classes. I would like to study this major because it is related to my interests. I like musical theatre, musicals, Broadway.
