Fahrenheit Universities to ceremoniously begin a new academic year

On the first of October this year, in the heart of Gdańsk, to the sound of carillons playing the Gaudeamus Igitur, a dozen or so universities in Gdańsk will solemnly open the 2022/2023 academic year. This is a unique event in the country, emphasising the role of the academic community in the life of the city.

Initiated by the Fahrenheit Universities, the celebration of science will be attended by representatives of FarU together with over a dozen Gdańsk universities and local authorities. The Mayor of Gdańsk, Aleksandra Dulkiewicz, and Wiesław Byczkowski, Deputy Marshal of the Pomeranian Voivodeship, will be present.

We warmly invite the entire academic community of our University - together with their families and friends - to take part in the celebrations. Let's show that Gdańsk is an academic city!

The celebrations marking the opening of the 2022/2023 academic year will begin at noon in the centre of Gdańsk, when a march of Gdańsk universities, representatives of local authorities and students will set off from under the Golden Gate. It will be accompanied by the figure of Daniel Fahrenheit, and the passage will be enhanced by musicians and acrobats.

The parade will culminate with the reading out of the Gdańsk Science Manifesto in Polish and English at the Main City Hall.

'The "Long Live Science!" event will be unique in the whole country,' - says prof. dr hab. Marcin Gruchała, Chairman of the Association of Fahrenheit Universities, Rector of the Medical University of Gdańsk. - 'We want to show that Gdańsk is a strong academic centre and a city of science. We want this day to be a joyful manifestation of the unity of the academic community, which is why we have invited all higher education institutions in Gdańsk to take part in the celebrations.'

Inspirational lecture for scientists

The second part of the celebrations will be a solemn meeting of the Senates and Faculty Councils of Gdańsk universities at the European Solidarity Centre in Gdańsk. It will be opened with a short concert by representatives of choirs, who will jointly sing the anthem Gaudeamus Igitur. The event will culminate with a lecture by prof. Szymon Malinowski titled Climate Crisis, Planetary Crisis. The event will be broadcast on the gdansk.pl portal; due to a limited number of seats, admission to the ECS is only possible for representatives of the Senates and Faculty Councils of Gdańsk universities.

On the same day, there will be an official 'shake-up' party for students of Fahrenheit University at the Academic Club of Gdańsk University of Technology Kwadratowa. The party will start at 8 pm.
