The 'Around Social Criticism' lecture series has begun. Dr Łukasz Moll, a sociologist and philosopher from the University of Wrocław, met with the academic community at the University of Gdańsk at the invitation of the Center for Student and Doctoral Activities of the UG. The event inaugurated the 'Around Social Criticism' series.
Dr Moll's areas of research include the theory of the common good, the idea of Europe, political philosophy, urban studies, political ecology, and social movements. He is the author of 'Nomadic Europe. Poststructuralist Borders of European Universalism.' Dr Łukasz Moll's articles can also be read in the scientific journal 'Theoretical Practice'.
The moderator of the meeting at the Faculty of Social Sciences of the UG was a PhD student at the University of Gdansk, mgr Mateusz Kufliński.
- 'Social criticism is a kind of self-denial, our way of thinking, the categories we have adopted. It seems to me that it is the core of what the University is and what Europeanness is. I understand it as a critical approach to existing forms. Europeanness as an approach to political, cultural, and civilizational forms that we erase with one hand and write something new with the other hand only to erase it again. I believe that if there is no place for this type of criticism at the university, it ceases to be a university,' - said dr Łukasz Moll.
In 'Nomadic Europe. Poststructuralist Borders of European Universalism' we can read about dramatic events such as people freezing to death on the streets, xenophobic attitudes and their consequences.
The doctor explained how to interpret the events that took place on Poland's eastern border and how we can think about the migration crisis from the perspective of his book.
- 'Europe has no borders because it is a border itself. It suffers rather from the borderline syndrome - trying to hide its boundlessness, it arbitrarily tries to restore borders,' - said dr Łukasz Moll.
The 'Around Social Criticism' event is a regular series, the next meeting will take place in January. Information will be available on the website and fanpage of the Center for Student and Doctoral Activities of the UG.
