Conservation work on the facade of the Pelplin Abbots' House - one of the few tenement houses in Gdańsk to have survived the wartime destruction of 1945 - has come to an end. This Saturday, May 13, 2023, we invite you to a meeting during which we will look at the unique tenement house in a completely new version. In addition, there will also be an opportunity to participate in a conservation workshop, which will introduce us to the secrets of saving wooden buildings.
The facade of the 17th-century building of the Pelplin Abbots' House has recently undergone conservation work to clean and rebuild damaged elements. What unexpected discoveries have come to light? Has the gilding on the decorative elements regained its former splendour, and what effect did the greenery growing on the elevation have on the brick walls?
Suppose you would like to learn more about the tenement's history and the building complex on Bielańska Street in Gdańsk. In that case, we invite you to open lectures and conservation workshops odNOWA at the Institute of Archaeology UG, ul. Bielańska 5, on May 13 from 5 to 8 pm.
The UG Museum organises the event in collaboration with the Polanki Foundation.
LECTURES
Institute of Archaeology UG, room 30, ul. Bielańska 5
6:00 pm - 7:00 pm Conservation history (of) the Pelplin Abbots' House.
Over the four centuries of its existence, the Pelplin Abbots' House has undergone reconstructions, its functions have changed, and it has been subjected to conservation treatments. How have previous conservation works affected its appearance? What work was carried out with the current restoration, and what surprises were discovered? We will find out from Ewa Jachnicka and Dariusz Chmielewski, responsible for the ongoing conservation work.
7:00 pm - 8:00 pm From Renaissance to Socialist Modernism, or the history of the Bielańska building complex in a nutshell.
A bold juxtaposition of architectural styles on the outside and a surprising combination of buildings on the inside - this is how the Historical Faculty of the University of Gdansk's headquarters at ul. Bielańska 5 can be described in a nutshell. Before the buildings housed scientists and students, they served as, among other things, an inn, an office and the headquarters of a design office. Dr hab. Marcin Kaleciński, prof. UG, a lecturer at the Institute of History of Art, will give a lecture on the history, architecture and eminent creators of each of the three buildings.
WORKSHOPS
Institute of Archaeology UG, room 29, ul. Bielańska 5
5:00 pm - 8:00 pm Introduction to the renovation of wooden objects
Is it worth restoring windows that are more than a century old? What are the properties of 'historic' wood that differ from that which is harvested today? Come and hear stories about the ins and outs of restoring wooden objects and try your hand at a practical class. We will be working on historic wooden window sashes, and Dorota Szymańska and Waldemar Tomaszewski, conservation practitioners with many years of experience, will guide us through the successive stages of the process.
You can choose to take part in one of the three-hour-long workshop blocks.
The workshop is intended for adults.
