Modern computer equipment - further benefits of introducing eUniversity

euczelnia

Modern equipment will enhance the University of Gdańsk’s IT system. New devices purchased by the decision of the Rector, prof. dr hab. Piotr Stepnowski are already underway at individual faculties. This means a significant improvement in the service and security of our IT systems.

Let us recall that the eUniversity IT system will be gradually implemented at the UG from November 2, 2023. In the near future, many of our University’s processes will be replaced by electronic circulation. Reducing the flow of paper documents significantly reduces the cost of handling them and protects the environment, which aligns with the Green University, which cares for sustainable development.

In addition to improving the handling of processes related to teaching and learning, the benefits of introducing the eUniversity include replacing computer equipment with a more modern one.

This is because the project assumes building a reliable and secure IT infrastructure and accelerating the progressive computerisation of the University of Gdańsk. To achieve these objectives, it is necessary to modernise IT resources and replace previously used computer equipment with new hardware. The equipment purchased will be distributed among the faculties participating in the PROUG project. The planned amount from the project for equipment purchase is close to PLN 4.9 million.

‘The development of IT infrastructure plays an important role in ensuring the smooth operation of the University, which is why replacement with newer, more efficient and secure solutions is essential,’ says Vice-Chancellor for Information Technology, Communication and Promotion dr hab. Aneta Oniszczuk-Jastrząbek, prof. UG. ‘Increasing numbers of documents, electronic files and intensive use require the regular replacement of computers and the implementation of new IT systems to improve data exchange and processing. This ongoing process aims, among other things, to maintain the University’s competitive position and adapt it to changing technologies and the needs of Students and Employees. The funding obtained for this purpose and the cooperation with the Gdansk University of Technology within the framework of eUniversity will contribute to more effective data management and thus improve the quality of teaching and administration.’

Below are the items on the list of planned equipment purchases:

- 450 computer sets, which will be distributed among the faculties to upgrade laboratory and computer rooms,

- 37 interactive Flipchart boards to be distributed among departments,

- 50 laptops constituting mobile computer sets with transport cases,

- 50 specialised computer sets with CUDA cores, which will enable the performance of highly advanced chemical calculations, ensuring an increase in the efficiency and quality of scientific research conducted at the Faculty of Chemistry,

- a minimum of 60 multimedia projectors, which will be distributed among the faculties to upgrade equipment in lecture theatres and auditoriums,

- a minimum of 100 digital data transmission devices, i.e. WIFI network access points, which will increase the efficiency of the wireless network and the number of users served,

- a disk array providing a backup data centre for the University’s central management support systems, which will equip the STOS CK in TASK,

- servers and SQL licences will make it possible to create a reliable SQL database cluster structure.

As a reminder, the eUniversity IT system will be implemented gradually from November 2, 2023. Schedules of the changes affecting the different groups - employees and students - will be available on the Employee Portal and the Student Portal, respectively, along with detailed instructions.
