Candles were lit on Rector Prof. Andrzej Ceynowa Square in memory of the victims of the shooting at Charles University in Prague. On December 22, the UG academic community commemorated the deaths of 14 people with a moment of silence.
On behalf of the UG academic community, Piotr Patalas from the Centre for Student and Doctoral Activities, the group's representative in the UG Senate, spoke: ‘It is hard to believe what happened yesterday at Charles University in Prague. Our scientists cooperate with Czech scientists. Therefore, still in shock and unwilling to accept this terrible truth, we join in pain with the academic community of the Prague university, with the families, loved ones and friends of the victims. Let us light candles in homage to them.’
The Rector, prof. Piotr Stepnowski, thanked us for honouring the memory of the Victims, saying: ‘The academic community is one big community; it is one big family. This tragedy happened in our family.’
The University of Gdańsk academic community was joined by the Mayor of the City of Gdańsk, Aleksandra Dulkiewicz, the Pomeranian Voivode, Beata Rutkiewicz, the Deputy Mayor of the City of Gdańsk Piotr Borawski, the Deputy Mayor of Sopot Magdalena Czarzyńska-Jachim and many others who wanted to express their solidarity with the academic community of Charles University in Prague.
