More than ten thousand journeys by bicycle, electric bicycle, and electric scooter were made by the participants representing the University of Gdańsk in the third edition of the competition ‘By bike to the university’, organised by the Fahrenheit Universities: the University of Gdańsk, the Technical University of Gdańsk and the Medical University of Gdańsk. On October 11, during a meeting in the Neophilology building, the winners of the competition were announced!

During six months the participants of the competition - employees as well as students and doctoral students of our University, commuting from home to work and place of study and back to their place of residence, completed a total of 10 096 journeys, including 9 301 journeys by bicycle, 328 by electric bicycle and 467 by electric scooter, covering the distance of 66 254 km on bicycle (90% of participants), electric bicycle (6%) and electric scooter (4%).

The most kilometres were covered by bicycle: 61,072 km, a distance of 2,632 km was covered by electric bicycle and 2,550 km was covered by participants using an electric scooter.

During the competition, 5 300 litres of fuel were saved, which translates into savings of almost PLN 31 000 and, most importantly, 12 191 kg of CO2 were not released into the atmosphere thanks to participation in the competition.

In accordance with the competition rules, recreational rides were excluded from participation.

Only journeys made by students and doctoral students from their place of residence to the university and by UG employees to work and back home were therefore included in the total pool of journeys and the number of kilometres travelled. A maximum of 10 journeys could be made in one week.

Prizes were presented to the winners of the competition by the Vice-Rector for Student Affairs, dr hab. Urszula Patocka-Sigłowy, prof. UG.

The meeting was also attended by representatives of the units responsible for organising the competition: The Centre for Sustainable Development - the coordinator of its first edition - and the Communication and Promotion Centre, which was responsible for supervising the competition.
