Construction of the UG Sports Centre to start soon

Two full-size sports halls, stands for over 500 spectators, a fitness room, a gym, a climbing wall, a football stadium, tennis courts, a 4-lane running track with a polyurethane surface - all this will be part of the UG Sports Centre to be built on the university's Oliwa campus at Wita Stwosza 31/37. The investment is planned to be financed from the university's funds and from external funds, including the construction of the complex, which has been pre-qualified for the Ministry of Sport's Programme for investments of particular importance to sport.

The construction of the Sports Centre of the University of Gdańsk, which is to start this year, will enrich the UG campus by four interconnected buildings with a total usable area of over 9 thousand square metres. Piotr Walczak, chairman of AZS UG, emphasises that this investment has been long-awaited.

- 'As a university club, AZS UG has over 20 sports sections, including sections performing in national leagues, e.g. Women's Futsal Extraleague, Men's Futsal League I, Women's Basketball League I, Women's Volleyball League III. There are over 500 student-athletes who regularly train and represent UG in the Polish Academic Championships. In the last year's edition of the AMP, we were ranked 6th in Poland in the general classification, and 3rd in the university classification. This highest result in the history of our participation in the AMP shows the sport's potential of our students,' says Tomasz Aftański, the deputy sports director of the UG Centre for Physical Education and Sports, the rector's plenipotentiary for the construction of the UG Sports Centre. - 'Until the new facility is built, we are forced to use external facilities, which makes it very difficult for our teams to operate. So we are happy that our wandering will be over. I would also like to point out that the sports centre will also serve the needs of teaching, rehabilitation and sport for people with disabilities. We have excellent human capital in the form of students and staff, so we will also try to establish ourselves in the area of organising sporting events. I can promise that there will be a lot going on at our Centre,' he adds.

The construction of the UG Sports Centre will include:

  • BUILDING A - a large sports hall with an auditorium for 324 people as well as a locker room and sanitary facilities. The pitches are designed for handball, futsal, volleyball, basketball and tennis. An area with a climbing wall is separated in the hall.
  • BUILDING B - administration part with the main entrance hall serving the remaining buildings and a passage to the stadium and technical rooms. On the ground floor, a cloakroom, information and security room and public toilets have been designed. In the administrative part, there are cloakrooms for instructors, referee's room, administrative rooms, service rooms, social room and sanitary facilities for employees. On the first floor, in the lobby area, there is a buffet with facilities and public toilets.
  • BUILDING C - a small sports hall with an auditorium for 200 people and cloakroom and sanitary facilities. The pitches are designed for handball, futsal, volleyball, basketball and tennis. A room for the commentator and director has also been designed on the mezzanine.
  • BUILDING D - additional sports halls: a gym, a combat sports hall and a fitness room with locker room and sanitary facilities, together with a warehouse and locker room facilities for the stadium and tennis courts.

In addition, investment plans include:

  • tennis courts
  • a football pitch with an artificial turf surface
  • a 4-lane running track with polyurethane surface,
  • a permanent stand with seating for approximately 380 spectators.

The new facilities will be available to UG students as well as university staff, young people from the University High School and students of the Gdańsk University of the Third Age, who use the gym in large numbers. It is also planned to make the sports infrastructure available to people from outside the UG academic community whenever possible.

A tender has now been announced, which will select the contractor for the works. Companies interested in participating in the venture will submit their bids by March 17. The winner will have 24 months to complete all tasks.

The construction of the UG Sports Centre was planned from the University's own funds, including treasury bonds held by the University, which can only be used for investment purposes. The investment task entitled 'Construction of the Sports Centre of the University of Gdańsk' has also been preliminarily qualified by the Ministry of Sport to the Programme of investments of particular significance for sport. A subsidy of PLN 27 million is planned for its implementation.
