The University of Gdańsk UG Library collects more than just books. Among the treasures that can be found in the Special Collections Department is a collection of posters, which has been growing since the 1980s. Part of this collection will be presented at the exhibition ‘Fleeting Things - the Polish School of Poster Art in the Special Collections of the University of Gdańsk UG Library’.
‘The themes of the posters in the collection are very diverse, so we decided to separate them into one group,’ say the exhibition organisers. ‘It includes works by representatives of the “Polish school of poster art” - a movement that originated in Poland in the 1950s and lasted until the mid-1960s.’
The exhibition will feature works by Henryk Tomaszewski, Jan Lenica, Jan Młodożeniec, Józef Mroszczak, Maciej Hibner, Franciszek Starowieyski and Waldemar Świerzy. The themes are varied - film and theatre posters will be presented alongside advertising posters. Leading Polish poster artists of that period also created commercial art, which is why one of the attractions of the exhibition are two graphic compositions made from book illustrations (from the collection of the UG Library) by Dominika Skutnik. In addition, visitors will be able to view animated films by Jan Lenica.
The exhibition will be available in the exhibition hall on the ground floor (Gallery) from 12 January to 12 February 2026.
We cordially invite you to visit!
