As part of the ‘Between.Pomiędzy Dispersed Festival’, prof. Christopher Morash from Trinity College Dublin will deliver a lecture on the dialogue between two UNESCO Cities of Literature – Gdańsk and Dublin. The event will take place at the House of Literature in Gdańsk on Thursday 24 September 2026 at 6.00 pm.
In his lecture, ‘What Rough Beast: Literature and the Memory of Place’, prof. Christopher Morash will explore Westerplatte as a site of remembrance, draw on the work of the eminent Irish poet W.B. Yeats, the 1923 Nobel Prize laureate, and will raise questions about literature, history and memory in times of successive cultural turning points. The lecture will be delivered in English, with simultaneous interpreting provided by the University of Gdańsk’s Linguana Research Society.
Meanwhile, from 21 to 25 September, a five-day academic seminar entitled ‘Reading Ireland After Ireland’ will take place, marking the latest instalment in the activities of the Beckett Research Group in Gdańsk. Together with employees, students, and doctoral students from the University of Gdańsk, Professor Morash is examining the transformations in Irish culture and literature, as well as the ways in which they are interpreted within a shifting social and historical context. The key question the participants are addressing is: “How should we read Irish literature at a time when the defining characteristics of this culture have changed beyond recognition?”
The event takes place as part of the ‘Between.Pomiędzy Dispersed Festival’ and is organised by dr hab. Tomasz Wiśniewski, prof. UG, with coordination by Patrycja Zielke, mgr and Marta Kruczalak. The lecture is organised in collaboration with the House of Literature in Gdańsk, under the patronage of the Irish Embassy in Gdańsk, with the support of the PROM programme.
