Shalom Polin - Gdańsk Jewish Culture Festival is back after a two-year break. This is the seventh edition of the event. Participants will have a chance to look at Israel from various perspectives, be it through culinary workshops or film screenings. We would like to invite you to the Philology Department from the first to the third of April.
The festival will begin with a lecture entitled 'Exodus Gdańsk. Jews in the Free City of Gdańsk in the years 1933-1939' by dr Krzysztof Ulanowski. Afterwards, the artist Maria Ka will be interviewed by Krystyna Weiher-Sitkiewicz. A short food break will be hosted by Ola and Sławek Kalkowski from the Israeli restaurant JAFFA eat & drink, and the day will be crowned with the screening of the film 'Miłość w czasie zagłady' (2020) by Maya Sarfaty.
On the second day of the festival, participants will learn how to prepare Jewish potato pancakes and will learn the basics of the Yiddish language. Movie fans will be happy to know that three film blocks will take place on this day - a screening of short films from the Warsaw Jewish Film Festival, 'Dowód Tożsamości' (2021), dir. Mikołaj Grynberg and 'My Name is Sara' (2019) dir. by Steven Oritt. Between the screenings, Krystyna Weiher-Sitkiewicz will talk to the author of the book 'Poszukiwacze i strażnicy żydowskiej pamięci', Patrycja Dołowy Skarby.
On the last day, dr Martyna Wielewska-Baka will talk about one of the most famous geopolitical conflicts of recent times. We invite you to attend a lecture entitled 'A few words about Israeli cinema - what is the conflict between Israel and Palestine about?' There will also be Yiddish lessons - dr Martyna Wielewska will conduct workshops on learning the Hebrew alphabet. At 3 pm, dr Rafał Kowalski will talk to the author of the book 'Izbica, Izbica', Rafał Hetman, and in the evening, two films will be screened: 'Desert Apples' (2014) dir.
