On the last Saturday of September (September 30, 2023), a colourful march and a lavish parade will take place at Długi Targ in Gdańsk. For the second time, universities and local authorities will officially open the new academic year!
The city of Gdańsk is not only one of Poland's most important academic centres but also a place where science, education and culture come together to create an inspiring environment for intellectual and social development. Here, in the city of freedom, we can observe the unique integration of the academic community, which takes place through cooperation, dialogue and the promotion of shared values.
That is why, on the last Saturday of September, students, academics and the authorities of several Pomeranian universities, as well as representatives of local authorities, will gather at the Golden Gate to participate in a unique celebration of science. We will be accompanied by the sounds of carillons playing Gaudeamus igitur. The pompous procession, accompanied by the Gdańsk Academic Orchestra, will pass along the Royal Route and end at the front of Artus Court. There, participants will hear inspiring speeches that will set the stage for the academic year to begin. It will be a unique opportunity to celebrate science together and integrate our community!
So let's come together to shout with one voice:
Long live the science! Vivat Academia!
Agenda for the event:
9:15–9:50 – arrival of participants (at the Coal Market next to the Cathedral) and positioning according to the parade structure
10:00 – start of the parade
10:00–10:30 – ceremonial passage along Długa Street and the Royal Route to Artus Court
10:30–11:15 – speeches in front of Artus Court, short speeches by students of Fahrenheit University and the Choirs of the three Universities
Gdańsk Science Manifesto
During last year's first 'Long Live the Science!' march, the local government and 14 representatives of Gdańsk's universities signed the Gdańsk Science Manifesto. It defines not only the academic community's most essential values but also its development's directions and goals. Importantly, its content is as up-to-date as it was a year ago! You can see the signed original in the University of Gdańsk Library.
The Gdańsk Science Manifesto content was signed during last year's opening ceremony of the 2022/23 academic year with the motto 'Long live the science!'

The 'Long Live the Science!' event is organised by Fahrenheit Universities and the City of Gdańsk.
The event is held under the honorary patronage of the Marshal of the Pomeranian Voivodeship and the Mayor of the City of Gdańsk.
Due to the organisation of the event ‘Long Live Science!’ on Saturday, September 30, between 09:00 and 11:30 a.m., there may be traffic disruptions on Długa Street and at Targ Węglowy on the section Katownia – Złota Brama (Prison Tower – Golden Gate).
The Daniel Fahrenheit University Union (FarU) connects the largest universities in the Tricity: the Medical University of Gdańsk, the Technical University of Gdańsk and the University of Gdańsk. The Association's most important task is to make the best possible use of the resources and potential of the three universities that comprise it. Its activities focus on developing solutions to support joint research and development work and recommendations for consolidation or the establishment of new inter-university doctoral schools.
