Jan Hevelius' birthday: presentation of Scientific Prizes, celebrations in Hevelianum, film about the astronomer. On Thursday, on gdansk.pl
On January 28, we celebrate the 410th anniversary of the birth of Gdansk's most famous astronomer. On this occasion Hevelianum will inaugurate the anniversary celebrations, the annual Jan Hevelius Science Awards of the City of Gdańsk will be presented, an outdoor performance and a film devoted to Hevelius will be shown. The events will be streamed on Thursday from 5 pm on gdansk.pl.
The Johannes Hevelius Science Prize of the City of Gdańsk is awarded for outstanding scientific achievements. This award has a long tradition - the first winner was selected in 1988 (the award itself was established a year earlier). For the first dozen or so years, Gdańsk's most important scientific award was granted in the field of exact sciences and natural sciences, but with time the award was expanded to include the category of humanities and social sciences.
The decision on who will receive the award is taken by the jury chaired by the President of the Gdańsk Branch of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Prof. Dr. hab. Grzegorz Węgrzyn, and the President of the Gdańsk Scientific Society, Prof. Dr. hab. Jerzy Błażejowski, and composed of the rectors of state higher education institutions in Gdańsk, a representative of the Mayor of the City of Gdańsk, previous winners of the award and a representative of non-public higher education institutions in Gdańsk.
The distinction is traditionally awarded on the anniversary of the birth of its patron, Johannes Hevelius, celebrated on January 28.
This year the ceremony will take place in Artus Court - the online event can be viewed on Thursday at 7 pm on www.gdansk.pl.
