Registration for the nationwide event 'Dziewczyny do ścisłych' has already begun!
More about the action:
- 'The girls are doing very well and set a good example for the next candidates with their story,' says dr Hanna Furmańczyk from the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics at the University of Gdańsk. Our University, particularly the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Computer Science, participates with twenty leading universities in the country in a promotional campaign entitled 'Dziewczyny do ścisłych!' The action will take place on April 22 online.
'Dziewczyny do ścisłych!' and 'Dziewczyny na politechniki!' are nationwide events organised by the Perspektywy Education Foundation. They aim to convince female high school and technical school students to study engineering and science. - 'Statistical reports unfortunately still show that the share of female students to male students in such majors is still unsatisfactory,' - says dr Hanna Furmańczyk, from the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Computer Science, University of Gdańsk.
The most popular universities among women are pedagogical and medical universities, where they account for about three-quarters of students. - 'At polytechnics, the proportion of women is 36 per cent, but they more often choose to study non-technological areas. The three most popular majors among women are cosmetology (99% women), pedagogy (95%) and interior design (94%),' according to the report Women at Technical Universities 2020 prepared by educational foundation Perspektywy. Men outnumber women on courses related to technology and engineering (electrical engineering, mechatronics and industrial IT).
According to the report, at universities where women constitute a vast majority, new technology fields of study are the domain of men. The percentage of women among those studying new technologies at polytechnics is a mere 17%, while 57% of the total number of students in Poland are women and only 15% of those studying IT.
- 'The experience of our faculty shows that the share of girls in our faculties increases every year, and thus the stereotype that science is only for men is broken. The girls are doing very well and set a good example for other female candidates with their stories,' informs dr Hanna Furmańczyk.
Dziewczyny do ścisłych campaign will take place on April 22, 2021, for the second time online. - Thanks to this, the girls will be able to get to know the offer of the University, take part in workshops prepared especially for them or simply talk to older female colleagues already studying in our fields of study - explains dr Hanna Furmańczyk.
