By Rector's Decree, a policy has been introduced governing the use of modern IT tools at the University of Gdańsk, in particular artificial intelligence. Comprehensive technical support in this area will be provided by the Interdisciplinary Laboratory for Artificial Intelligence Applications, whose Director, dr Jakub Neumann, prof. UG, serves as the Rector’s Representative for Artificial Intelligence Systems, whilst support regarding security and infrastructure will be provided by the University of Gdańsk IT Centre. As a result of the work carried out to date by the Interdisciplinary Laboratory for Artificial Intelligence Applications, the entire academic community of the University of Gdańsk - staff, PhD students and undergraduates - has already gained free access to advanced Google AI tools via the Google Workspace for Education service.
The introduction of a coherent University of Gdańsk AI Policy is intended to ensure that the university remains open to modern technologies, particularly those based on artificial intelligence, whilst ensuring that their use is ethical, responsible and secure. The use of AI in research, teaching and administration will be subject to these regulations, with a transparent framework and expert support provided. Detailed recommendations will be set out in separate documents.
Google Workspace for Education and the ‘AI at UG’ information series
Google Workspace for Education is a suite of integrated cloud-based tools, including advanced Google AI tools. Thanks to the efforts of the Interdisciplinary Laboratory for Artificial Intelligence Applications, following a lengthy contract negotiation process and technical preparations, all members of the University of Gdańsk’s academic community have gained free access to the service. It is particularly valuable that, under the terms of the signed agreements, data entered into the language models cannot be used to train them, which ensures maximum information security and the protection of the University of Gdańsk’s interests.
The service will be integrated with university domain accounts, meaning that logging in will not require the creation of a separate account. GoCloud Polska, acting on behalf of Google, is responsible for the technical integration and training.
To enable members of the academic community to make the most of the potential of Google AI tools, an information series entitled ‘AI at the University of Gdańsk’ has been launched. The first stage of this series consists of training sessions for staff, which have already begun – over 200 people took part in the first online session. Training sessions for students will also be launched shortly, and in the longer term, initiatives aimed at the local community are planned, with the aim of promoting the informed and critical use of artificial intelligence tools.
