AZS UG futsal players promoted to Ekstraklasa!

A tense, nerve-wracking and action-packed two-match series against Sośnica Gliwice brought our team the coveted promotion to the Statscore Futsalekstraklasa. After a 5:2 home win in the return leg, our rivals proved to be better and won 4:2, but the three-goal advantage they brought to Silesia from Gdansk was enough.

- 'We are very happy with this promotion. In the several-year history of the league section, this will be our seventh season in the highest competition class in Poland. However, we are also aware of the fact that the sporting and organizational level is gradually rising. Our rivals have big budgets and huge support in their cities, the matches are shown on national sports television, there are a lot of very good foreign players,' - notes Tomasz Aftański, the CWFiS Deputy Director for Sports. - 'However, we have a very interesting team, which gathers its skills on several fronts. It is a mixture of experience and youth, supported by the great work of coach Wojciech Pawicki,' - adds Tomasz Aftański.

In the entire season of the 1st Polish Futsal League, our students were defeated only by... Legia Warszawa. The two-match series could have covered the whole league round with emotions. In the rematch in Gliwice, our students started sluggishly and quickly lost 2 goals. Mateusz Cyman's answer (the team's top scorer throughout the season) brought some peace to Pawicki's charges. However, the hosts' pressure did not stop. In the final minutes, with the score of 3:1, the hosts withdrew their goalkeeper and fired at the goal guarded by Kacper Sasiak. Our young goalkeeper saved his team from losing a goal several times, and Mateusz Wesserling's shot across the pitch meant that the hosts had to score as many as 2 goals to level the competition. They managed to do it only once and the tickets to Statscore Futsalekstraklasa went to Gdansk.

- 'We are proud of our players. I highlight their perseverance in this tough covid season. The coaching and organisational staff also made a big contribution. Thanks to this promotion, as the University of Gdansk we have two teams in the highest competition class in Poland from the new season. After all, our students from AZS UG Futsal Ladies have been playing continuously in the Women's Futsal League for five seasons now,' - Tomasz Aftański concludes.
