Where does the truth about the regularities of economic life come from? How has the methodology of economic research evolved? How to properly decipher economic and social phenomena? The answers to these questions, among others, can be found in the new monograph entitled 'Philosophy and Methodology of Economic Sciences' written by prof. dr hab. Jan Burnewicz from the Faculty of Economics UG.
At the end of September 2021, PWN Scientific Publishing House has published a book entitled Philosophy and Methodology of Economic Sciences - prepared to enrich the methodological skills of persons scientifically engaged in deciphering the truth about economic and social phenomena. This work is the culmination of over 45 years of scientific work by prof. dr hab. Jan Burnewicz.
- 'The monograph contains the results of in-depth research and detailed analysis as well as an answer to the existing cognitive dilemmas. It is not a textbook characterisation of methodological knowledge but its critical interpretation,' - says the author, prof. dr hab. Jan Burnewicz. - 'The motivation to write this book was the desire to overcome the aversion to methodology observed in Poland among people writing promotion dissertations (doctoral, habilitation, professorial). The guiding thesis was the conviction that the cognitive value of scientific dissertations and other publications is determined by the sound methodological preparation of their authors.'.
The publication is intended mainly for economists, but considerations of a philosophical and logical nature are of universal significance and therefore may be an inspiration for representatives of other scientific disciplines. The text of the book has been written in a reader-friendly language to encourage readers to take a greater interest in methodological issues.
The book covers many aspects of scientific research, both philosophical and pragmatic. It consists of 9 chapters devoted to the following groups of issues: perception and solution of economic problems, scientific nature of economic knowledge, a framework for rational economic thinking and action, utilitarianism of economic knowledge, methodological inspirations in scientific research, characteristics of contemporary scientific research and economic studies, the process of economic scientific research, methodology of quantitative research, scientific writing and communication.
The publication of the book was co-financed by the Rector of the University of Gdańsk, prof. dr. hab. Piotr Stepnowski, and the Dean of the Faculty of Economics, dr hab. Monika Bąk.
