Researchers on Polonia in the Polish Senate

The meeting of the Committee on Emigration Affairs and Liaison with Poles Abroad of the Senate of the Republic of Poland, which was devoted to the presentation of scientific achievements in the field of Polish issues and cooperation with the Polish community abroad, was attended by dr hab. Anna Mazurkiewicz, prof. UG, Vice-Dean of the Faculty of History for Scientific Research and International Cooperation UG.

It was the second in a series of meetings organised by the Senate Committee to gather recommendations for the programming of public policy in this sphere. (Retransmission of the meeting is available under the link: https://av8.senat.pl/10KSEP251.

Before the Commission meeting, prof. Anna Mazurkiewicz together with dr Rafał Raczyński, representing the Emigration Museum in Gdynia, also took part in consultations with senator Kazimierz M. Ujazdowski, chairman of the Commission.

Dr hab. Anna Mazurkiewicz prof. UG presented the scientific achievements of the researchers from the University of Gdańsk who deal with the study of the Polish diaspora (Faculty of History, Faculty of Social Sciences, International Border Studies Center UG) and presented the achievements of the cooperation with the Polish American Historical Association, which has been developed at the Faculty of History UG since 2012.

In the Report on the State of Migration Research in Poland after 1989, prepared by the Committee on Migration Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences in 2018, it is written that at the University of Gdańsk one can speak of the formation of new institutional structures in the field of migration research.

Research on the Polish diaspora at the Faculty of History UG does not have a long tradition comparable, for example, to the Cracow centre. - 'The nature of research in this field is clearly oriented towards the United States, and to a lesser extent towards Scandinavian countries (which in turn are dominated by sociologists from the Faculty of Sociology UG, whose work was also mentioned during the Commission's meeting),' - informs dr hab. Anna Mazurkiewicz, prof UG.

Research on American Polonia at the Faculty of History of the University of Gdańsk has been developing in symbiosis with the Gdańsk American Studies Department since 2008, the Emigration Museum in Gdynia since 2011, and in close cooperation with American scientific societies. 'Since June this year, this potential has been significantly enhanced by the establishment of the IBSC at the UG - an interdisciplinary and international centre for border studies. Ambitious with new energy and beyond the divisions set by scientific disciplines, the researchers gathered within it took an active part in the preparation of the conference programme: "Borderland", which is co-organised with the Migration Research Committee of the PAS, the Historical Faculty UG and the Emigration Museum in Gdynia,' - adds dr hab. Anna Mazurkiewicz, prof. UG. The conference will be attended by over 180 researchers from Poland and abroad.
