UG INSTITUTE OF INFORMATICS NOMINATED FOR ‘POMORSKIE SZTORMY’ CONTEST

The new building of the Institute of Informatics has been nominated for this year edition of ‘Pomorskie Sztormy’ (Pomeranian Storms) contest, among the Pomeranian Euro-inspirations in the ‘Infrastructure’ category. Readers and internet users may vote until the 13 March 2020. The competition is organized by Gazeta Wyborcza Trójmiasto newspaper and the Marshall’s Office of the Pomorskie Voivodship.

You can vote for the following categories: The Investment of the Year, Sportsperson of the Year, The Event of the Year, Pomeranian Euro-inspirations – Human Capital. The voting lasts till 13 March.

The University of Gdansk, Institute of Informatics building has been nominated for the Pomeranian Euro-inspirations in the ‘Investment’ category. The regulation states that: ‘ The Contest Voters select the most important, most inspiring infrastructure investment successfully using EU funds,  that has been/is or will be conducted at the territory of Pomorskie Voivodship.’

The official award ceremony will take place on 24 March in the Baltic State Opera in Gdańsk.

Information about the building

The building is the state-of-the-art facility, one of the few such in Poland. It houses lecture halls, workrooms and science labs that meet teaching and research challenges of the XXI century. The new building started operation in October, last year. The investment was financed  by the Regional Operational Program for Pomorskie Voivodeship for the period 2014-2020, in response to job market demand for IT specialists.

The building mainly serves the students of the newly created field of study – applied informatics, launched in 2019/2020 academic year (where 76 freshmen students were admitted). This field of study combines theoretical basis with multiple current programming languages and app creation technology trainings. The curriculum for the new field of study has been devised in close cooperation with the IT employers.  The effect of this cooperation are, among other things, classes conducted by the experienced specialists from Tricity companies.

The University of Gdansk, Institute of Informatics building was created under the „Rozbudowa budynku Wydziału Matematyki, Fizyki i Informatyki Uniwersytetu Gdańskiego w Gdańsku na potrzeby kształcenia na kierunku o profilu praktycznym” project ( The extension of the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics of the University of Gdańsk for the purpose of practical education). The building has five floors ( one underground and four ground floors) with the usable floor area of around 3912m2 and total volume of 22678 m3. The facility is connected to the existing Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics building with connectors on second and third floor. The building houses seminar and computer halls, auditoriums, academic halls and offices and social rooms. The academic halls are equipped with the up-to-date ICT machinery allowing for the new coming informatics workforce education.

DORACO Sp. z o.o., chosen in a public tender , has been the main contractor of the project.

Functional-Utility Program and its concept has been  devised by Archi-Tech-T Marcin Pilch company, represented by Marcin Pilch and Maciej Jaśkowiec. Construction and executive projects have been devised by ARCHPLUS Studio Projektowe Marek Gawdzik company, ordered by Doraco sp. z o.o..

The investment value, required for project completion, was estimated to exceed PLN 39 million. The University of Gdańsk received PLN 21 million in funding from the Regional Operational Program for Pomorskie Voivodeship for the period 2014-2020, the remaining sum, over PLN 18 million, comes from university’s own contribution. Kainos Software Poland Sp. z o.o.  is also a partner of the project.
