SCIENTISTS FROM UG NEW MEMBERS OF THE POLISH ACADEMY OF SCIENCES

Among the new members of the Polish Academy of Sciences there are scientists from the University of Gdańsk. Professor Hanna Mazur-Marzec from the Faculty of Oceanography and Geography UG and Professor Piotr Stepnowski from the Faculty of Chemistry UG and the Rector of the University were elected by the General Assembly of PAN.

During all stages of elections to the Polish Academy of Sciences academics took into account primarily the contribution of candidates to the development of science and their most important scientific achievements.

In the case of Prof. Hanna Mazur-Marzec it was the demonstration (on a scale > 10.000 years) of the existence of a close link between the occurrence of the toxic species Nodularia spumigena and global warming, as well as the description of over a hundred new structures of cyanometabolites and demonstration of their pharmacological potential.

In the case of Professor Stepnowski it was the development of the world's first comprehensive analytical methods for ionic liquids and their further effective application in the physico-chemical characterization of these substances, industrial and environmental analysis and the development of pioneering in the world methods of trace chemical analytics for the detection of residues of medicinal substances and their metabolites in the environment.

Corresponding and Full Members of the Polish Academy of Sciences form a corporation of 350 scientists and are elected by the General Assembly of the Polish Academy of Sciences from among those scholars who have distinguished themselves by their scientific achievements and authority, and who are of good repute. The Academy consists of domestic members (actual and correspondents) and foreign members. Membership of the Academy is for life.
