The University of Gdansk for the first time in the UI GreenMetric "green" ranking

This ranking assesses the university's pro-environmental activities related to sustainable development and climate protection, attention to the maintenance of green areas, energy neutrality, the level of use of sustainable transport, optimized water consumption and waste management, as well as all educational activities for the environment.

The UI GreenMetric ranking has been published since 2010 when 95 universities in 35 countries were listed - now 959 universities from 80 countries worldwide participate. This significant increase in the number of participants reflects a significant trend at universities around the world - a strong and growing awareness of responsibility for the planet and, determined by its condition, the fate of future generations. University strategies related to environmental education, research topics and the broadly defined third mission to society through cooperation are built around this idea. Without all these factors, it is impossible to think of facing global problems connected, for example, with climate change.

For the University of Gdańsk, the positioning in this ranking is an important starting point in building the concept of a green, sustainable university, taking care of the climate and the environment.

In this year's edition of the ranking 959 universities from all over the world participated, including nine from Poland, among which the University of Gdansk was classified on the 4th position after the Gdansk University of Technology (great 134th position in the global ranking), Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan (250th position) and a non-public University of Information Technology and Management from Rzeszow (411th position). Other Polish universities reporting to the "green ranking" are Cracow University of Technology, University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn, Academy of Special Education in Warsaw, Medical University of Wroclaw, and Cardinal Stefan Wyszynski University in Warsaw. Our university was classified as 635th place in the world. The highest marks were awarded to UG in the categories of Education and Research and Water, taking respectively the 3rd and 2nd place in Poland in these criteria.

The world ranking podium is occupied by universities from the Netherlands and England. Full list of listed universities is available at: https://greenmetric.ui.ac.id/rankings/overall-rankings-2021
