PhD students from UG among the winners of the competition 'Popularisation doesn't hurt'

Two PhD students from the Faculty of Chemistry UG have been awarded in the 'Popularisation doesn't hurt' competition. Mgr Mateusz Adam Baluk was awarded the title of 'Doctoral Experimenter of the Year' and third prize in the team competition for his project 'Studies with sign language'. First place in this competition, on the other hand, went to mgr Patrycja Laszuk and her team for the bilingual science-integration game 'Hex Integration'. On April 23, the young scientists presented their projects and received their awards.

'Popularisation doesn't hurt' is a project aimed at people who are passionate about science and want it to go beyond university walls. It is a competition with elements of training. Thanks to it, students and doctoral students who are trying to present their field to a wider audience can establish contacts with other popularisers of science and take part in workshops on storytelling or marketing of innovations.

This year, the awards gala took place on April 23. The event began with speeches by speakers. The participants could hear, among others, a lecture by dr Jerzy Jarosz on the history of popularisation of science and Mikołaj Federowicz on popular science board games.

Then the participants of the competition took the floor. In the second part of the event, each of the five teams had fifteen minutes to present their project. Among the presented initiatives were 'NeuroMovie - The Brain Likes You!', 'Skiller- a new generation of scientist', 'Studies with sign language - learning without limits', 'Academic SelfCare - how to take care of your health during the studies', 'HEX INTEGRATION - наукова game'.

After a short break, the jury selected the winners of the team competition and awarded several individual prizes. In the first competition, the project 'HEX INTEGRATION - наукова gry' won. - A scientific board game, which children from Poland and Ukraine can play together. Part of the team that prepared this attraction is mgr Patrycja Laszuk from the Department of Molecular Biotechnology. Third place went to the 'Studies with sign language' initiative - a website that helps deaf people find studies. Its co-author is mgr Mateusz Baluk from the Department of Environmental Technology. A doctoral student from UG was also the winner of the 'Doctoral experimenter of the year' award.

We congratulate the winners.
