Thanks to the work and commitment of six students of Genetics and Experimental Biology from the Faculty of Biology at the University of Gdańsk, under the supervision of mgr Barbara Kubica-Daniel from the Centre for Foreign Languages at the University of Gdańsk, an online Polish-English dictionary was published in the field of broadly understood biology - from biochemistry to ecology. It includes both singular and plural forms as well as regular and irregular ones. The uncountable forms are also marked. For many translations, English synonyms and spelling variants of expressions are included.

Polish-English dictionary of biological terms contains nearly three thousand entries. It was prepared by students of Genetics and Experimental Biology at the Faculty of Biology, University of Gdańsk: Marcin Banacki, Anna Barczak, Kacper Boguszewski, Katarzyna Bryszkowska, Hubert Czyż and Aleksandra Kujałowicz. This is an extremely important digital publication, which fills a gap in the world of Polish specialist scientific translations. The authors started working on the dictionary as early as August 2020.

Each term is accompanied by a definition in English, which is designed to indicate whether the translation sought is appropriate for the desired context.

- 'The currently existing biological dictionaries, both online and physical, are dictionaries of the "Polish language dictionary" type, i.e. explaining the meaning of words used in this science, and thus in fact are more like encyclopaedias than dictionaries,' - says Marcin Banacki, a student at the Faculty of Biology of UG. - 'There are, however, Polish-English dictionaries of medical terms - but they contain only terms directly connected with human biology, e.g. "hip", and not with biology in general, e.g. “book lung". Therefore, the dictionary will undoubtedly be of interest to professional translators as well as students of natural sciences and the scientific community of biologists,' - he adds. 

The dictionary was created under the supervision of mgr Barbara Kubica-Daniel from the Centre for Foreign Languages at the University of Gdańsk. A team of students of the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Computer Science under the supervision of dr Hanna Furmańczyk and mgr Wojciech Łojkowski was responsible for preparing the website: Sandra Leman, Mikołaj Lomiak and Rafał Majewski. Whereas Joanna Jaworska, a Master's student at the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Gdańsk, is responsible for the UI design.

The paperback publication is also planned.

The project is carried out under the aegis of the Centre for Foreign Languages of the University of Gdańsk, with the support of the director of this unit, Alina Swebocka, MBA and prof. dr hab. Dariusz Szlachetko, Dean of the Faculty of Biology.
