Piotr Pawlak, student of mathematics at the Faculty of Mathematics , Physics and Informatics of the University of Gdańsk was awarded the City of Gdańsk Culture Prize for Young Artists. He was recognized for his outstanding achievements in national and international piano competitions. Piotr Pawlak has also won numerous prizes in mathematics , physics, informatics and mathematical linguistics. He performs in Poland and has given numerous concerts abroad.
This year marked the 20th Anniversary of awarding the City of Gdańsk Culture Prize for Young Artists. The prize is granted to young artists (under the age of 35) in various fields for outstanding achievements, inspiring work and interesting projects. The current City of Gdańsk Culture Prizes for Young Artists, following the Chapter decision, led by Andrzej Stelmasiewicz were awarded to:
- an interdisciplinary illustrator and applied graphic designer, Patryk Hardziej
- an intermedia artist, Martyna Jastrzębska
- a pianist, Piotr Pawlak
A dancer, Julia Ciesielska won the online voting on Gazeta Wyborcza Trójmiasto site for the Audience Award. Also, the inaugural City of Gdańsk Marcin Opitz Region and Culture Promotion Prize was awarded to Marek Rogala, the creator of the eskaem.pl, rapid urban culture website.
Each prize-winner received PLN 10,000, a statuette designed by the artist, Tomasz Radziewicz and a diploma. On behalf of President Aleksandra Dulkiewicz, the awards were presented by the Vice-Mayor for Education and Social Services, Piotr Kowalczyk on November 29, 2019 at the ceremony held in Żak club, Gdańsk.
About the winner
Piotr Pawlak is a pianist, a student of mathematics at the Faculty of Mathematics , Physics and Informatics of the University of Gdańsk and a student of instrumental performance at the Stanislaw Moniuszko Academy of Music in Gdańsk. He was nominated for the City of Gdańsk Culture Prize for Young Artists for his outstanding results in national and international piano competitions. His most notable achievements include: The First Prize and Ex Aequo Prize for the best improvisation in XI Darmstadt International Chopin Competition; The Second Prize and Special Prize in The Stanisław Moniuszko International Competition of Polish Music in Rzeszów; The First Prize and two Special Prizes at the “Chopin pod Wawelem” Young Pianist International Competition in Kraków; The Second Prize and two Special Prizes at VIII International Chopin Piano Competition in Budapest; The First Prize in Organ Music Competition at the XXIX Religious Music International Festival in Rumia.
