Pomeranian Literary Award – ‘Wiatr od morza’ (Sea breeze)

Dr hab. Izabela Morska from the UG Faculty of Modern Languages, prof. dr hab. Cezary Obracht-Prondzyński from the UG Faculty of Social Sciences and retired University of Gdańsk professors, prof. dr hab. Józef Borzyszkowski and prof. dr hab. Zenon Ciesielski received the 2019 Pomeranian Literary Awards.

Pomeranian Literary Award ‘Wiatr od morza’ was established in 2018 to express gratitude towards the creative work and numerous achievement of writers and publishers from Pomeranian region. The awards are presented to authors living and creating in Pomeranian region, or to authors deeply involved with Pomeranian matters, for life achievements or work for literature, books, readership in the year preceding the award presentation. Pomeranian Voivodship Local Government is the award founder, Voivodship and City Public Library in Gdańsk is the organizer.

This year as many as 374 book were submitted to the contest. During the online ceremony, winners of the three main categories were awarded: ‘Literary Book of the Year’ (authored by male and female writers from Pomeranian region), “Pomeranian Book of the Year’ (subject of works connected with Pomeranian region) and ‘Literary Work Lifetime Achievement Award’ and the ancillary category – ‘Kashubian Literary Award’.

‘Znikanie’ (Disappearing), the book by dr hab. Izabela Morska won the first category and received the award. The work of the writer, essayist, culture critic and member of the Polish Writers Society tells the story of a mysterious disease and everything associated with the fight against it: starting from the contact with healthcare workers, ending with social relations in general.

„Historia Kaszubów w dziejach Pomorza” (Kashubian People throughout the history of Pomerania) volumes III-V written by prof. dr hab. Józef Borzyszkowski (historian, retired long-time University of Gdańsk employee, one of the most notable members of the Kashubian-Pomeranian Association) and prof. dr hab. Cezary Obracht-Prondzyński (historian, sociologist and anthropologist) was selected the ‘Pomeranian Book of the Year’.  The monograph is a synthesis of the existing researches on the everyday life of Kashubian people among multiple cultures and changes happening in material and spiritual domains.

The lifetime achievement award was presented to prof. dr. hab. Zenon Ciesielski, Scandinavian literature and culture historian, retired long-time University of Gdańsk employee, main originator of the Scandinavian studies at the University of Gdańsk, honorary doctor of the University of Umea in Sweden.

Prof. dr hab. Father Adam Sikora won the last category, ‘Kashubian Literary Award’, theologist, monk, Professor of Bible Theology, researcher at the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, Bible and Tora translator, form original languages to Polish and Kashubian.
