University of Gdańsk third most popular university in Poland during the recruitment

According to recruitment data published by the Ministry of Education and Science, the University of Gdańsk was ranked 6th in Poland among the most frequently chosen public higher education institutions and 3rd among universities.

As we can read on the Ministry of Education and Science website, a total of 441,823 people were enrolled in the first year of studies in the academic year 2023/2024 at universities supervised by the Ministry of Education and Science as of October 1, 2023, including 336 952 persons for first-cycle studies and uniform master’s studies and 104,871 persons for second-cycle studies.

A total of 297,525 persons were enrolled in public higher education institutions (of which 72,160 for second-cycle studies), including 239,779 full-time students (of which 52,521 for second-cycle studies).

In the ranking of public universities most frequently selected by candidates - according to the total number of applications for full-time first-cycle and full-time master’s studies - the University of Gdańsk was ranked 6th in Poland among public HEIs and 3rd among universities (after the Warsaw and Jagiellonian Universities).

‘Third place among universities shows that we are the most popular in northern Poland. The University of Gdańsk, which has the best infrastructure in Pomerania, has also changed in the last three years in terms of its care for students,’ says Rector prof. dr hab. Piotr Stepnowski. ‘We pay attention to what is important for young people - we expand cooperation with business, we deepen opportunities for students to build their career paths already during their studies, but we have also strengthened student activities, creating the Centre of Student and Doctoral Student Activity, which is thriving and integrates the student community. We launched the e-University programme, which will strengthen the IT infrastructure and improve student services at UG.’

The University of Gdańsk was among the top ten universities most frequently selected by candidates (more than four applicants per place) for full-time first-cycle and full-time master’s degree programmes.

In this ranking, among universities, UG was outranked only by the University of Wrocław, the University of Warsaw and the Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University in Warsaw.

The most popular faculties according to the total number of applications from candidates within a scientific discipline (the leading discipline to which the major is assigned) (over 20,000):

  1. management and quality sciences - 72,519
  2. information technology and telecommunications - 67 268
  3. economics and finance - 55 664

On the other hand, according to the total number of applications of candidates for the field of study (above 8 thousand):

  1. computer science - 43607
  2. psychology - 42267
  3. management - 33739

 

Recall that at the University of Gdańsk, the most popular majors were:

  • in terms of the number of candidates per 1 place: Japanese Studies (20.00), Scandinavian Studies (14.44), and Criminology (13.40),
  • in terms of the total number of applications: Psychology (2.2 thousand candidates), Law (over 1.3 thousand), Economics (1.3 thousand), and Management (over 1.1 thousand).
