Doctoral promotions, awards from the Rector of UG, and a lecture on bird behaviourism - the Faculty of Biology was the first to inaugurate the 2024/25 academic year!
‘Allow me to mention three people who are particularly distinguished for the establishment of the Faculty of Biology in 2008. I am thinking here of Professor Barbara Lipińska, Professor Edward Skorkowski and Professor Lech Stempniewicz. Without their effort, determination, and boundless belief in the rightness of such activities, the Faculty of Biology would probably not exist today,' said the Dean of the Faculty of Biology, prof. Dariusz Szlachetko. ‘I think it is worth remembering all those who, to a greater or lesser extent, have contributed to the contemporary conditions of our work. It is thanks to them that so many employees of our faculty achieve success.’
In the context of the upcoming celebrations marking the 55th anniversary of the University of Gdańsk, prof. Dariusz Szlachetko referred to the rich history of our university, including the situation of scientists during the communist era and the repressions against UG students and employees.
The Dean also welcomed representatives of the university authorities, the Chancellor's Office, and the Deans and Vice-Deans of other UG faculties. The inauguration was also attended by Deans and Vice-Deans of the Faculty of Biology of previous terms and retired professors.
‘We care about the future of our community, in which the green faculty, the Faculty of Biology, has a very important place. You are the first faculty, not only because of the alphabetical order but also in many other areas of our university. You are an invigorating faculty, but also, and not only because of your colour, a soothing faculty,’ said the representative of the university authorities Vice-Rector for Student Affairs dr hab. Urszula Patocka-Sigłowy, prof. UG. ‘In the coming months, we should focus on further scientific research, but also on educating the intellectual elite of our society and on cooperation with the environment. In carrying out the tasks entrusted to us, let us remember that we should not be afraid of the future. It is necessary to face it.’
The Faculty’s Deans Team honoured four female academics who were awarded the title of professor last academic year and presented habilitation diplomas, Rector's awards and medals of the Commission of National Education. Prof. Urszula Patocka-Sigłowy and the Vice-Dean for Science, prof. dr. hab. Joanna Izdebska, conducted the doctoral promotion.
‘I, the Rector, by virtue of my legal appointment, make you doctors of science. I declare this publicly, I hand over to you all the rights and privileges of a doctoral degree, the proof of which is a diploma bearing the seal of the University,’ said the Vice-Rector for Student Affairs on behalf of the UG Rector.
Vice-Dean for Education dr hab. Krzysztof Banaś, prof. UG presented diplomas to the best students of the previous academic year, welcomed new students to the UG academic community and conducted the matriculation ceremony.
The inaugural lecture was given by prof. dr. hab. Piotr Tryjanowski from the University of Life Sciences in Poznań and the Institute of Advanced Studies at the Technical University of Munich. Among other things, the scientist talked about the results of studies on bird behaviour in the city and in the wild, and about the interesting process of birds adapting to live alongside humans.
At the end of the inauguration, the Dean and Vice-Deans thanked the previous Vice-Dean for Students and Cooperation, dr Dorota Myślińska, for her work on behalf of the Faculty of Biology.
