Proper physical development of children and young people, a healthy lifestyle with an emphasis on physical activity and the popularisation of women's basketball - these are the main objectives of the letter of intent signed on 10 December between the MG13 company and ASA UG. Marcin Gortat, who was present at the meeting, also declared his contribution to the project.
‘Today we are establishing cooperation with one of Marcin Gortat's schools. Currently, this school is emphasising the development of women's basketball. As you know, our women's basketball team plays in the first league, and cooperation with such an entity as Gortat ‘s ASA will allow for an influx of female players who train first at primary school, in high school, and then will come to the University of Gdańsk,’ says ASA UG President Piotr Walczak.
‘There has been women's basketball at league level at the University of Gdańsk for more than 20 years, but we are not just closing ourselves off to cooperation in this field. There are also representatives of other disciplines at the school, whom we are willing to develop in our sports sections. We are also counting on the development of an extremely attractive variant of basketball at our school, i.e. the Olympic 3x3 version,’ adds Tomasz Aftański, Director of the Centre for Physical Education and Sport.
During the meeting, declarations of infrastructural and content-related support were also made by the MG13 Company, which runs the Sports Championship School, in the form of organising workshops for particularly talented athletes. Investment plans were also discussed, including the construction of 3x3 basketball courts.
‘At the University of Gdańsk, we support ambitious people who also want to pursue their sporting passions. We offer them preferential conditions already at the stage of university recruitment. Among the fields of study, we also have those that may be of interest to athletes, such as Sports Management. Particularly talented students can take advantage of an individual course of study and receive a scholarship from the rector for their sporting achievements. The support of our activities by the basketball champion is an additional incentive for young athletes,’ said prof. Piotr Stepnowski, Rector of UG.
The meeting was attended by prof. dr hab. Piotr Stepnowski, Rector of UG, Tomasz Aftański, Director of the Centre for Physical Education and Sport, Piotr Walczak, President of ASA UG, Marcin Gortat, Jakub Urbanowicz, President of the Management Board of MG13 company, Paweł Krawczyk, President of Gortat School Gdańsk and Bartłomiej Perzanowski, President of Gortat Academy Gdańsk.
‘If our school grows, with a partner like the University of Gdańsk we will really gain a lot of opportunities - first of all for children and young people who will study at our school and then study here at the University. Apart from the fact that we want to keep the sporting level as high as possible, the educational level is also important to us, so that our student can later be a student at the University. In addition to infrastructural and logistical cooperation, I think the cooperation with the Gortat School will result in mutual benefits,’ concluded Marcin Gortat.
