Cooperation of the Faculty of Philology UG with Goyki 3 Art Incubator Sopot

An agreement on cooperation in the field of education and culture has been signed between Goyki 3 Art Incubator Sopot and the Faculty of Philology of the University of Gdańsk. It will cover areas of common educational and artistic interest, including enabling student internships in the developing cultural institution that is Goyki 3 Art Incubator Sopot, e.g.: at the Sopot Literary Festival.

The agreement was signed by Joanna Cichocka-Gula, director of the Art Incubator, and dr hab. Joanna Jereczek-Lipińska, prof. UG, Vice-Dean for Education and Cooperation with the Environment at the Faculty of Philology, UG.

The scope of cooperation will also include co-creation of study programmes, especially, but of course not only, in the field of management of artistic institutions, joint international cultural undertakings and activities promoting culture and, very importantly, inspiring students and doctoral students to conduct research in the field of culture and artistic activity.

Art. Incubator

Let us recall that the Art Incubator is a new self-government cultural institution in Sopot. Its primary task is to conduct activities aimed at the creation and dissemination of culture, cultural education and support for creative circles.

Art. Incubator deals with building a network of cooperation between domestic and foreign environments, organization of artistic residencies and creative work programmes. It also deals with documenting phenomena accompanying cultural life and popularization of culture and history of the city of Sopot.

'As Art Incubator, we are interested in strengthening the cooperation with scientific circles because it seems to us that nowadays the combination of science and art is a sine qua non requirement for the functioning of a modern cultural institution which we consider ourselves to be. Art. Incubator is a place that is supposed to create favourable conditions for work and artistic development,' - explains Joanna Cichocka-Gula, the director of Art Incubator. - 'Our aim is not to create a product but to support the process which accompanies the creation of artistic work. I think that we can offer the university space for the organisation of workshops, masterclasses, etc., which will be addressed to students and graduates,' she adds.

As Janna Cichocka-Gula emphasizes, Art Incubator wants to invite students to participate in the Literacki Sopot (Literary Sopot) festival, so that they can have a close look at how an international literary festival is created. - 'It will also allow them to get in touch with the issues of translation in practical activities,' she adds.

This year's edition of the festival will be Irish. Students will be able to participate in meetings with guests. - They will be able to 'host' foreign guests, have contact with 'cabin' interpreters and hear from them what the job of an interpreter at the festival is like and what difficulties it entails.

Faculty of Philology UG

- 'Cooperation with Goyki 3 Art Incubator is an opportunity to realise the postulate of bringing the Faculty and, in particular, the future translators educated at the Department of English Translation at the Institute of English and American Studies, closer to the local culture and art environment,' - says dr Paula Gorszczyńska of the Faculty of Philology UG, the initiator and person responsible for coordinating the process of establishing the agreement's provisions.

In her opinion, the signed agreement creates a framework for inviting the employees and collaborators of Goyka 3 Art Incubator to share their knowledge and the institution's current cultural offer with students. - 'Taking into account the significant role of culture and art in finding answers to the most burning questions about the reality around us, we hope that students' contacts in the Goyki 3 Art Incubator will make them more sensitive to these important issues, making them conscious interpreters and citizens,' - emphasises dr Paula Gorszczyńska.

The students will lend their translation skills, among other things, through internships and volunteering at events organised by the Incubator. Additionally, at least once a year, the Goyki 3 Art Incubator will visit the Faculty of Philology to present job offers to students.

Dr Paula Gorszczyńska also announces the cooperation between the Art. Incubator, the Faculty and the Between Pomiędzy Foundation. Also, the cooperation of Art. Incubator with the Management of Cultural Institutions major. -' As far as the Department of English Translation Studies, which I represent, is concerned, we would like to enable students to organize educational visits to the Incubator as part of the Culture and Contemporary Thought - Translator's Perspective course. Moreover, we will talk to our partner about his needs in terms of translating texts and events. We will also acquaint him with the assumptions of our study programme, hoping to jointly search for new areas of cooperation,' she explains.

She also emphasizes that it will certainly be possible to identify among the scientists from the Faculty people whose knowledge could enrich the offer of meetings with authors and debates conducted, for example, as part of the Literary Festival Sopot. - The Festival itself can be an inspiration for both scientists and students to conduct research, not only in the field of translation of literature or interpretation accompanying the Festival. The University also offers the possibility to conduct research commissioned by the Partner,' she concludes.
