A meeting to summarise the performances of the volleyball teams of the Academic Sports Association of the University of Gdańsk in the last academic year was held on July 7, with UG Rector prof. dr hab. Piotr Stepnowski. Changes to the U23 competition were also discussed.
The promotion and development of women's volleyball at UG has long been one of the top topics in the AZS. The lack of a strong team in Pomerania has been the driving force behind the creation of a training pyramid, starting with mini-volleyball for children, followed by youth and then senior women, for whom the UG provides education in the American system - a combination of learning and sporting development, as well as the participation of the academic team in PZPS central competitions. The UG's cooperation with UKS Akademia Siatkówki "Trefl" Gdańsk also plays an invaluable role in the success of the project.
- 'We talked about the development of our team, the project we have created and the prospects for the future. I hope that the President of the Polish Volleyball Federation, Mr Sebastian Świderski, will help us jointly promote this idea of the functioning of training, and we also learned about the new idea of the U23 Polish Championship games, to which we, as the University, have applied,' - said Adam Miotk, the coach of the AZS UG women's volleyball team and the President of the UKS Akademia Siatkówki 'Trefl' Gdańsk. - 'Previously, these games were held under the name Young League, but now it would function with the Universities. Our project meets all the requirements to participate in these competitions and we will do everything to make women's volleyball a showcase of the university,' - he added.
The meeting was attended by the President of the Polish Volleyball Federation (PZPS), the outstanding Polish national team member from 1996 to 2011, Sebastian Świderski, Assistant to the Board of the Polish Volleyball Federation (PZPS) Monika Gorzewska, President of AZS UG Piotr Walczak, Director of the Centre for Physical Education and Sport dr Jan Patok, Deputy Director for Sports Tomasz Aftański, President of UKS AS TREFL GDAŃSK Adam Miotk, former President of the Polish Volleyball Federation (PZPS) Jacek Kasprzyk, coach of AZS UG Volleyball Academy Agata Kopczyk and long-time UG lecturer Edward Pawlun.
- 'For years, both beach and indoor volleyball have been very popular. We have been successful in both disciplines. This year the volleyball players won a medal in the university indoor league, and last season we won medals in the beach version. The third place in the central level II league won by our volleyball players is a huge success in their debut,' - said Piotr Walczak, President of AZS UG.
