Art historians, lawyers and medievalists will discuss the inspiration and context of the work of one of the pioneers of the Renaissance between April 20 and 22. During the conference, 'Artists, Bankers, and Sailors. Contexts of the times of Hans Memling' we will learn, among other things, what role pirates played in the transportation of the 'Last Judgement', whether Hans Memling's work is a good source of knowledge about anatomy and why the Dutch artist did not include Jews in his famous triptych.
The conference will commemorate the 550th anniversary of the capture of Hans Memling's triptych, The Last Judgement, by the Gdańsk corporal Paul Beneke, which has been in Gdańsk ever since.
The conference is organised by the Centre for Memling Research UG, the National Museum in Gdańsk, the Faculty of History UG, the Faculty of Law and Administration UG and the UG Publishing House. The conference is held under the patronage of the Rector of the University of Gdańsk, prof. dr hab. Piotr Stepnowski, and the Mayor of the City of Gdańsk, Aleksandra Dulkiewicz.
The conference's themes are varied, relating to the history of the acquisition of the triptych, and political relations, including Gdańsk, but above all, focusing on Hans Memling and his work. The language of the conference will be English.
