Join us for the Fahrenheit Science Fair

piknik

We invite children, adults and whole families to the Hevelianum for the Fahrenheit Science Fair, which will take place on May 28. The programme includes workshops, games, competitions, shows, a science show, a performance and a debate. Admission is free.

The motto of this year's Fahrenheit Science Fair is Science with Climate. Many attractions will refer to the Sustainable Development Goals, an action plan agreed to by UN member states. All to collectively transform and reshape a world in which the needs of the present generation are met sustainably, respecting the environment and considering the needs of future generations.

The Fahrenheit Science Fair will take place on Gradowa Mountain for the second time. We invite you to this special Sunday - says Paweł Golakdirector of the Hevelianum. - The Hevelianum has joined forces with the Fahrenheit Universities, and together, we have created a programme that will allow every participant to engage in science to protect our planet while having fun at the same time. We also invite you to experiment at our exhibitions.

Importantly, in a light-hearted fair format, there will be talk about important and valuable things affecting the environment and people's well-being.

We have prepared many attractions for both children and adults. We will conduct experiments and quizzes with prizes, create brain models and homemade cosmetics, invite people to free preventive examinations and ultrasounds or learn breast self-examination techniques using phantoms. There will be science shows and even a zero-waste fashion show, - says prof. Adriana Zaleska-Medynska, director of the Daniel Fahrenheit Association of Universities in Gdańsk. - The Fahrenheit Science Fair is not only an important event for us but also one of the few opportunities to introduce scientific issues, inspire, interact and have fun together with the residents of the Tricity.

One of the main points on the fair map will be the Science Stage, where an uninterrupted series of attractions is planned. It will begin with the opening ceremony at 11:00 am, during which the Gdańsk Academic Orchestra will perform, and the Fahrenheit Awards will be presented. At 11:40 am, a competition for the youngest will start - the Land of Positive Energy. Ten minutes later, the older ones are invited to a zero-waste fashion show. Between 12:15 pm and 1:15 pm, engaging science-themed workshops are planned: on microplastics (12:15 pm), sustainable cooking (12:30 pm), noise in our lives (12:45 pm) and the physics of basketball (1:00 pm). At 1:15 pm, a sports aerobics champion will perform, and then a moment of laughter awaits participants with a scientific stand-up. Later in the day, there will be two science shows: The Best of Hevelianum (1:45 pm) and 1013 hPa - a story about air (3:00 pm). The younger public will not be bored! As early as 2:15 pm, they can listen to the tale of autonomous boats. The day's attractions on stage will be topped off with a Pooh Treat, i.e. talks not only about honey. The Science Stage will be hosted by Aleksandra and Piotr Stanisławski, authors of the popular science blog Crazy Nauka.

Another highlight of the Fair will be the Science Village, with more than 45 tents offering demonstrations, workshops and experiments in medicine, science and ecology. Visitors will be able to find out, for example, how to become a defender of the environment, how to create a brain from unnecessary things or what to do with used tyres. There will be demonstrations of recycling and the world under the microscope and an astronomical show. Visitors will be able to see how medicines are made and how to make flexible polyurethane foam in the colours of the rainbow. The Village and other attractions will be open to visitors during the Fair hours, i.e., from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm.

There will be plenty of environmental games and workshops in the EduFun Zone. During these, children will learn, among other things, how to give a second life to used tea leaves and plastic caps and make a pencil case from scraps of material. During this time, carers will be able to make eco-jewellery, homemade washing powder or cosmetics for their own use. Sports activities and a mobile laboratory have been prepared for children in this zone.

New this year will be the Fahrenheit Laboratory. A unique combination of theatre and chemistry laboratory, where the story of the life of the famous Gdańsk scientist will be created live using special chemical effects. The performance will last 30 minutes and will be presented thrice at 1:15 pm, 2:30 pm and 3:30 pm. The seats for each show are limited, and free tickets will be available at the information desk during the event. The show is suitable for adults and children over the age of six.

Rounding off the attractions will be the debate Science Speaks. In the Balance (2:00 pm), during which the guests will discuss, among other things, whether the ambitious goals of sustainable development are reconcilable with our needs, what we have a real influence on, and where we can already make changes. The debate will be moderated by Aleksandra Stanisławska, science journalist and co-founder of CrazyNauka.pl.
