The second edition of the 'Including gender in research' competition for the best-scoring masters and doctoral theses incorporating a gender perspective in research has been concluded. The competition is organised as part of the MINDtheGEPs project under the EU-funded Horizon 2020 programme.
As part of the EU Horizon 2020 Modifying Institutions by Developing Gender Equality Plans (MINDtheGEPs) project at the University of Gdańsk, led by prof. dr hab. Ewa Łojkowska, a number of activities are being undertaken to implement the gender equality policy at our university, as set out in the Gender Equality Policy Implementation Plan at the University of Gdańsk - Equality Actions for 2022-2023.
One of the project's activities is awarding annual prizes for the highest-scoring master's theses and doctoral dissertations incorporating a gender perspective in the area of research. The call for applications for the second edition of the competition was announced in September 2023. Graduates awarded a master's or doctoral degree at the University of Gdańsk between 2022 and 2023 were eligible to apply for the award. As of this year, four awards are given: for the highest-rated master's and doctoral theses in the area of science and life sciences and for the highest-rated master's and doctoral theses in the area of humanities and social sciences.
This year, twelve theses were submitted for competition by five faculties of our university: the Faculty of Social Sciences, the Faculty of Philology, the Faculty of Management, the Faculty of Biology, and the Intercollegiate Faculty of Biotechnology. The members of the committee spoke highly of all the entries. The final outcome of the ‘Include gender in research’ competition was determined by the innovation of the research undertaken and the consistent inclusion of a gender perspective. The winners were selected by the competition committee composed of prof. dr hab. Krzysztof Bielawski (Chair of the Committee), prof. dr hab. Grzegorz Węgrzyn, dr hab. Natasza Kosakowska-Berezecka prof. UG, dr hab. Joanna Kruczalak-Jankowska prof. UG, dr Magdalena Żadkowska, mgr Marta Dziedzic (Secretary of the Committee).
The award for the highest-scoring master's thesis in the humanities and social sciences went to mgr Julia Wyrzykowska from the Faculty of Social Sciences, UG, for her thesis entitled ‘Upbringing in a Catholic Family and the Attitude to One's Sexuality Among Young Women’, prepared under the supervision of dr hab. Dorota Rancew-Sikora, prof. UG.
The award for the highest-scoring master's thesis in science and natural sciences went to mgr Dominika Goik from the Intercollegiate Faculty of Biotechnology UG and MUG for her thesis ‘The Influence of High-Intensity Interval Training on the Epithelium and Immune System During Pregnancy - a Proteomic Analysis’, prepared under the supervision of dr hab. Paulina Czaplewska, prof. UG.
The award for the highest-scoring doctoral dissertation in the social sciences and humanities went to dr Adam Konopka from the Faculty of Philology, UG, for his work ‘Around Birth Regulation in the People's Republic of Poland. An Analysis Based on a Discursive-Historical Approach’, prepared under the supervision of dr hab. Dorota Rancew-Sikora, prof. UG.
The award for the highest-scoring doctoral thesis in the sciences and natural sciences went to dr Patrycja Juchniewicz from the Faculty of Biology UG for her thesis ‘Inactivation of Chromosome X in Metabolic Disorders and in Healthy Persons’, prepared under the supervision of dr hab. Joanna Jakóbkiewicz-Banecka, prof. UG and assistant supervisor dr Ewa Piotrowska.
Appreciating the high level of the works submitted this year, the jury additionally decided to award two distinctions: mgr Marianna Mazur from the Faculty of Social Sciences UG for her thesis entitled ‘Impact of Endangered Masculinity on Attitudes Towards Polish and Ukrainian Women’ prepared under the supervision of dr hab. Natasza Kosakowska-Berezecka, prof. UG, and mgr Karolina Matusiak from the Faculty of Management UG for her thesis entitled Women's way to leadership in business, prepared under the supervision of dr hab. Piotr Wróbel, prof. UG.
The winners and commended persons in the 'I include gender in research' competition will present their work at the graduation ceremony in the coming year.
