A team of gardeners will take care of the university campus

for. Beata Gibka

A team of qualified gardeners - employees of the university instead of an external company - will take care of the plantings on the university campus. The employees will mainly take care of the day-to-day maintenance of the Campus' green areas and their functionality.

The main field of activity will be the University Campus in Gdańsk-Oliwa, but the gardeners are also to support the UG field units. The team will take care of the Campus' green areas on an ongoing basis and will be concerned with transforming them into a more functional and attractive place, also visually.

Forming the team began with the appointment of mgr Beata Gibka, a UG graduate with experience in horticulture, botany and administration, to the position of Green Areas Coordinator, which was placed in the administrative division under the direct supervision of the Head of the Didactic Facilities Department, mgr Anna Downar, with the substantive support of the Head of the Property Operations Centre Office, inż. Daniel Zaremba.

Setting up the team was decided as early as 2022, but changes were introduced gradually.  A group of specialists consisting of a coordinator and four gardeners was formed, and the equipment needed to carry out the work was gathered. Storage and utility facilities have been organised behind the administration building near the courts.

This year, it is planned to prepare an overall concept for the management of the Campus' greenery. Based on this, maintenance of the existing greenery and new plantings will be carried out.

The team is cooperating with other UG units whose common field of action is greenery, ecology and sustainability, including, among others, the Centre for Sustainable Development. The result of these activities is the 'Green Space Management Policy'.

‘On a day-to-day basis, cooperation is practised with Building Administrators, who support the gardeners in an advisory capacity, in terms of organisation and by seconding their staff for external work,’ informs Manager Anna Downar. ‘The plan is to broaden the scope of cooperation with both internal UG units and external partners, which will translate into effects visible in the field.’

We encourage you to keep an eye on the Campus green spaces and how they are gradually changing to become even more welcoming for us, their regular users, and visitors.
