During a visit to Gdańsk, Minister of Sport and Tourism Sławomir Nitras, together with MEP Agnieszka Pomaska and the Chair of the Sports and Tourism Committee of the City of Gdańsk Łukasz Bejm, inspected the modest sports facilities of the university and familiarised themselves with the plans for phase 1 of the construction of the Sports Centre.
The Polish Women's Academic Football Championships are underway in Gdańsk, with University of Gdańsk players enjoying success. Minister Sławomir Nitras came to observe the games, and at the same time visited the sports facilities available to our university.
The guests were accompanied by the Rector, prof. dr hab. Piotr Stepnowski, and the coach of CPhES Edward Pawlun, who presented the Minister with the successes of UG athletes in academic sport. Comparing the university's small sporting base with the athletes' achievements, Sławomir Nitras admitted that their efforts and successes should be appreciated all the more.
The Rector, prof. Piotr Stepnowski, presented the guests with plans for the first stage of the construction of the UG Sports Centre, which is to begin soon. A multi-purpose sports hall will be built to serve not only teaching needs but also the development of both academic and professional sports within our structures.
‘This will also be the venue for the matches of the teams entered in the Academic Leagues competition, a new project by the Ministry of Sport which is ideally suited to the needs of the community,’ said Rector prof. Piotr Stepnowski. ‘We recently signed an agreement with Trefl Sopot, as a result of which the team, previously playing as Trefl II Sopot, plays under the name University of Gdańsk Trefl Sopot. We also have an internal dual career programme dedicated to athletes, where we support the best of them regarding their enrolment into university, student residences, and scholarships.’
The construction of the UG Sports Centre will be subsidised by the Ministry of Sport and Tourism with PLN 25 million.
