The University of Gdańsk has moved up 100 places in the latest edition of the prestigious QS World University Rankings 2025. This is the biggest promotion among Polish universities from the first thousand on the list. ‘The promotion confirmed our University's chosen and consistently pursued development policy,' says Rector prof. Piotr Stepnowski. As many as 5663 Higher Education Institutions from all over the world applied for classification in this year's ranking edition, and only 1503 of them were finally qualified.
QS 2025 - success of the University of Gdańsk
This year's edition of the QS World University Ranking is a huge success for our university, which is moving up significantly in Poland and the world.
In the list published on 04.06.2024, the University of Gdańsk climbed 100 places among universities from all over the world (from the range of 951-1000 to 851-900) and this is the biggest promotion among Polish universities from the first thousand on the list.
‘In the face of fierce competition, with all universities striving for the best ranking positions, this is a great achievement,’ says UG Rector prof. dr hab. Piotr Stepnowski. ‘The promotion has confirmed our chosen and consistently pursued development policy of the University of Gdańsk. This is confirmed by the UG's best-ranked indicators, including participation in international research networks or issues of sustainable development.’
The University of Gdańsk has also significantly improved its national ranking, moving from the 11th to the 8th position among all Polish universities and from the 6th to the 4th position in the group of classic universities (only UW, UJ and UAM were better ranked).
Polish universities in the QS 2025 ranking
As many as 5663 HEIs worldwide applied for classification in this year's ranking edition, of which only 1503 were qualified. 22 Polish HEIs made it into this year's ranking (the same number as last year), of which the best ranked were the University of Warsaw (258th position worldwide), Jagiellonian University (312) and the Warsaw University of Technology (527). The national podium has not changed from last year.
Ranked in the 851-900 range alongside UG are the University of Mining and Metallurgy in Kraków, the University of Life Sciences in Poznań and the University of Wrocław.
Ranking methodology
The QS ranking is based on 5 main criteria. 50% of the weighting is the Research and Discovery index, of which 30% is made up of reputation ratings from academic experts from around the world, and the remaining 20% is the number of citations, which is an estimate of the impact and quality of the scientific work carried out by the university. A further 20% of the final assessment component is the Employability and Outcomes indicator, developed based on employer feedback and on the institution's ability to ensure high levels of employability of its graduates and leadership education. Other assessment criteria and their weightings are: Learning Experience - the ratio of lecturers to students (10%), Global Engagement - international engagement (15%) assessed by the number of foreign academics, students and participation with international research networks, and Sustainability - engagement with sustainability issues (5%).
University of Gdańsk's best results in categories
Our University has improved its overall score (overall score) from 10.6 in 2023 to 13.4 today. The best-scoring indicators globally for UG were participation in international research networks (476) and sustainability issues (483).
