‘My adventure with the Middle Kingdom began in 2010, when I started working with Harbin Pedagogical University. I have been teaching Polish language and culture to students at this university for several years. I have also supervised diploma theses related to this country. One of my seminar students is currently the head of the Polish Language Department at a university in Sichuan,' says prof. Aneta Lewińska. ‘Taking over as Director of the Confucius Institute is the next stage of my adventure with China. I would like to make use of my previous experience so that the Institute's activities spread in ever wider circles.’
The Confucius Institute at UG started its activities in the academic year 2015/16. The institution aims to promote the Chinese language and culture in the region. Language courses and cultural workshops are organised, as well as lectures, academic seminars, and training for Chinese language teachers. The institutes are also responsible for organising state Chinese language proficiency examinations (HSK, BCT, YCT) and supporting applicants to apply for Confucian Scholarships. They also promote Chinese art by organising celebrations, exhibitions, film reviews, or lectures.
‘I would like to expand the Institute's offerings to reach a wider audience. We have considerable resources here, including a large teaching space and materials related to Chinese culture. The previous directors have established cooperation with many institutions, including the Gdańsk City Hall, schools, and businesses. I hope that I will be able not only to maintain these activities, but also to develop them,' says prof. Aneta Lewińska. ‘We also intend to continue our activities popularising Chinese culture, including the organisation of all events related to China, such as the Chinese New Year or the Kite Festival.’
