A publication on the latest tools used in environmental studies of Baltic microorganisms has been published in the renowned journal ‘FEMS. Microbiology Reviews'. Twenty-six scientists from Poland, Finland, Lithuania and Sweden worked on the article, including as many as 11 researchers from the University of Gdańsk.
The prestigious positions of the publication's first author and the corresponding author went to prof. dr hab. Hanna Mazur-Marzec from the Faculty of Oceanography and Geography of the UG and prof. dr hab. Alicja Węgrzyn from the University Centre for Applied and Interdisciplinary Research. 'FEMS. Microbiology Reviews' is a journal with an impact factor of 10.5; according to the MNiSW list, publications there are worth 200 points.
‘It is a review paper that aimed to present the role of the latest tools used in environmental research for understanding the biodiversity and function of Baltic microorganisms,' says prof. Hanna Mazur-Marzec. ‘At the same time, the paper pointed out that although the Baltic Sea is recognised as a poor ecosystem in terms of living resources, our knowledge of the microorganisms living in it is still poor.’
The publication, entitled Biodiversity of microorganisms in the Baltic Sea: the power of novel methods in the identification of marine microbes, was the initiative of the Commission for Marine Microbiology and Biotechnology at the Gdańsk Branch of the PAS. The co-authors of the paper are scientists from the Faculty of Biology and the Faculty of Oceanography and Geography of the UG, as well as employees of other scientific institutions in Poland and abroad who specialise in the study of particular groups of Baltic microorganisms.
